Alpha Shalish is a dead and forgotten Imperial world.[1]

History

Pre-Imperium

Human colonists first discovered Alpha Shalish in the early Age of Technology. The red world orbiting twin suns had an ideal environment but also contained a xenos species that resisted colonization attempts. After a sustained campaign of extermination, the native species was destroyed and the human colonists moved in, burying or destroying the ancient relics of previous inhabitants. With the discovery of mineral-rich worlds in nearby systems, Alpha Shalish became a thriving port world.[1]

Alpha Shalish grew into a shining example of human ingenuity, with towering hive cities, robotic defences, and automated agriculture. The world welcomed emerging psykers. Suddenly, interstellar communication collapsed, heralding the Age of Strife.[1]

Records compiled between M28 and M29 painted a bleak picture. The once-thriving planet had fallen. Hive cities were deserted and reputedly haunted ruins. The humans had regressed to plains-dwelling hunter-gatherers fearful of technology. Only small orders of monks retained any technical understanding. When the Lacrymole arrived in M30, they enslaved the humans, herding them into pens for use as labour and livestock.[1]

Early Imperium

Alpha Shalish was rediscovered during the Great Crusade. Remembrancers among the 203rd Expeditionary Fleet chronicled the World Eaters' annihilation of the Lacrymole. The agri-machines were repaired and restarted. Within four generations of compliance, Alpha Shalish's inhabitants had built new hives on the ruins of the old. When the Horus Heresy erupted, Alpha Shalish sent men to support the Emperor of Mankind. The rebuilt port world was a major hub of the Great Scouring and a vital part of Segmentum Solar.[1]

War of the Beast

The next time war came to Alpha Shalish was when the largest Waaagh! the galaxy had ever seen descended upon it in mid-M32. The Orks held the world for five hundred years, dismantling its hive cities for scrap metal, slave labour, and target practice. The Blood Angels wrested the world back to Imperial control, but Alpha Shalish would suffer from millennia-long civil wars and internal strife that made it vulnerable to xenos attacks. By M35, it was under alien control again.[1]

Later History

An Adeptus Ministorum crusade freed Alpha Shalish in M38 and the Ecclesiarchy established a strong presence, using the anti-xenos sentiments to turn it into a launching pad for further crusades over the millennia, scouring the Iron Rim and driving the Paleopods to exinction. When an Eldar fleet arrived in mid-M39, Alpha Shalish refused to meet their ambassadors.[1]

The Warp rippled with the death cries of Alpha Shalish's billions. When the Imperial Fists arrived six days after receiving signals from the system, they found a dead, cracked world. The Inquisition dispatched investigators, but when crisis after crisis swept the Imperium, Alpha Shalish was left behind and forgotten.[1]
