The Angels Vermillion are a Successor Chapter of the Blood Angels. While most successors of the Blood Angels maintain close ties with one another and their parent Chapter, the Angels Vermillion have resolved to bear their curse alone.[6a]

Overview

Angels Vermillion Marine[8]

The Angels Vermillion shun all contact with their brother and parent Chapters, and bear their curse in solitude. While Imperial Records of the Chapter's exploits since the Second Founding have been nothing short of exemplary, one wonders about the cause of their self-imposed exile from their brethren, and whether it is simply a shame that must be endured alone, or something darker.[4b]

History

Origin

The 9th Chapter of the Blood Angels Legion was known as the Angels Vermillion. Elements of the Chapter participated in the Scouring of the Nostramo Sector, led by Praetor Kaelon until his death at Sothis in 017.M31 and thereafter by Praetor Sargan Varsaris. They discovered the crashed Shroud of Eventide, the vessel of Captain Ophion of the Night Lords on Kalleth, salvaging it and renaming it the Crimson Intent in 020.M31 in preparation for the coming edict of the Second Founding.[10]

Recent History

The Angels Vermillion have earned numerous honours in the service of the Imperium, but are rarely seen fighting in the same war zone as the Blood Angels, or any of their parent Chapter's other successors.[6a] Though their battle records are shrouded in secrecy, their recorded achievements have been nothing short of exemplary.[14]

The Angels Vermillion follow their Progenitor Chapter's system when it comes to showing Company and squad, and battlefield role.[4c]

The Sorrowing

The Sorrowing is a secret and dark ritual of the Angels Vermillion, passed down through millennia for many generations. It is usually[12a] conducted every 50 years and sees the Angels Vermillion fatally drain the blood of a portion of the population of Corinal. The Angels Vermillion then bathe in the blood before spilling their own by sacrificing a Sanguinary Priest. The blood is then made into a mixture that is placed in their power armor dispensers, which is used to nourish the Angels Vermillion in battle. This method has allowed the Chapter to reduce the number of their Battle Brothers who fall to the Black Rage and Red Thirst, but the Vermillion see The Sorrowing as a horrible burden on their souls.[11]

However as the ritual was being conducted in 428.M41, Imperial refugees from Dovar arrived at Corinal, seeking safety. The Vermillion instead decided to use a majority of the refugees for The Sorrowing, while the rest would be forcibly made into the Chapter's Thralls. This was later discovered by the Blood Angels High Chaplain Hereon, when he came to find out what became of the refugees. The Vermillion's Chapter Master, Chauld, explained to Hereon why they needed to conduct The Sorrowing, but the shocked High Chaplain vowed to put a stop to the abominable ritual. Hereon then tried to kill Chauld, but the Chapter Master's Sanguinary Guard intervened and stopped the High Chaplain.[11]

Chauld knew that if Hereon was killed by them to keep their secret, however, the Blood Angels and their Successor Chapters would hunt down and destroy the Angels Vermillion. Instead, the Chapter Master threatened that if the Blood Angels ever moved against the Vermillion, for what happened to the Dovar refuges or for conducting The Sorrowing, then he would reveal the existence of the Red Thirst and Black Rage to the Inquisition. If the Angels Vermillion were to be destroyed, Chauld warned, then they would ensure all of the Sons of Sanguinius would die as well. Seeing that he had no choice, Hereon reluctantly agreed to leave and would make excuses for the disappearance of the refuges. When he returned to Baal, however, Hereon informed his Chapter Master of the horrors their Successor Chapter had committed[11] and Dante immediately ordered that the Angels Vermillion be shunned and their aid was never to be accepted by the Blood Angels.[12a]

The Sorrowing is still in use by the Angels Vermillion, but there are those within the Chapter who believe it should no longer be used. Its current Chapter Master, Kuldoth Moar, however greatly increased the ritual's usage, which has led his reign to become controversial amongst the Angels Vermillion.[12a]

Devastation of Baal

This was enforced even prior to the Devastation of Baal, as the Blood Angels and their Successors prepared to defend Baal from the Hive Fleet Leviathan. Captain Aphael‎ was a vocal supporter of the Vermillion and despite knowing Dante's ill feelings towards them, he argued that the Commander should call upon them for aid. Dante angrily refused to do so, but he would not reveal to Aphael or anyone else why he loathed the Vermillion[15]. At the same time, the Vermillion's Chapter Master, Kuldoth Moar, refused to send his forces to aid the Blood Angels as Leviathan advanced upon Baal. He forbid any of the Vermillion from aiding their Founding Chapter, but due to Moar's extreme usage of The Sorrowing ritual his reign had become controversial amongst his Chapter. This led Captain Fen to convince three other Captains, including Malthaen and the Vermillion's 5th Captain, to disobey Moar's orders. They then took their Companies to aid the Blood Angels, though in the dangerous journey to reach Baal, they were relentlessly hunted by Hive Fleet Leviathan, no matter how far they traveled through the Warp. This led the group to lose contact with the 5th Captain and his Company, as well as the deaths of Captain Malthaen and most of the Third Company, at the hands of the Tyrainds. By the time they reached the Blood Angels they had suffered so many losses, that Fen was left with only a hundred and twelve of his Battle Brothers to command. Even then, Dante initially refused to accept their aid, until Fen told the Commander how they had disobeyed Moar's orders and the losses they suffered to reach Baal. This caused Dante to relent and welcome them to join the effort to save Baal[12a], but it is not known how many of Fen's forces survived to see the defeat of Leviathan.[12b]

Trivia

Conflicting sources

In Codex: Angels of Death (2nd Edition) and Codex: Blood Angels (3rd Edition), the Angels Vermillion are depicted as wearing carmine coloured armour with a yellow chest eagle.[1][2]

In How to Paint Space Marines, however, the chapter is depicted in the scheme used by the Angels Encarmine: vermillion coloured armour with a yellow chest eagle, black shoulder pad trims and backpack.[7]

Codex: Blood Angels (5th Edition) conforms to the earlier codices.[4c]
