The Company of the Bridge was a civilian militia that fought on the forgeworld Katara against Khornate forces.

Overview

The militia was formed during the opening stages of the Doom of Katara. Several citizens of the planet's hive city Creontiades had taken shelter from the cultists by hiding in a chapel within the city. When Ecclesiarchy Confessor Lehrn Ornastas also arrived at the chapel and discovered the survivors, he lead them into the chapel's tunnels that connected to the city's sewer system. While originally scared by the overwhelming chaos forces, the confessor rallied them into a religious fevor, causing the group to violently attack and slaughter a group of unsuspecting cultists. The group then armed themselves with the crude weapons carried by the cultists, forming themselves into a militia. The militia made their way to the bridge over the Kazani Strait (a channel of water that separated the hive city from the mainland), battling cultists along the way and recruiting any survivors they found.

As the militia approached and crossed the massive bridge, the Imperium's Kataran 66th "Kataran Spears" Imperial Guard Regiment as well as the Titan battlegroup of the Pallidus Mor and Imperial Hunters engaged the cultists (which now had been reinforced by the Traitor Titan Legion the "Iron Skulls". The group discovered maintenance walkways under the bridge which allowed them to cross without being detected by the cultists or get caught in the crossfire above. While they suffered losses, the group barely managed to cross before the bridge was destroyed in the battle.

The next morning, the civilian militia grouped up with the Kataran 66th. When The leader of the regiment asked who they were, Confessor Ornastus named the militia the "Company of the Bridge". The Company of the Bridge then received weapons and supplies from the 66th. Soon afterwards, the cultists used a ritual to replace the destroyed bridge with a massive brass one, allowing them to cross. The loyalist titan legion (the Pallidus Mor) had returned to the nearby city of Deicoon for rearmament and repairs. Lacking the support of the loyalist Titans, the Company of the Bridge and Kataran 66th were forced to retreat to Deicoon.

Unfortunately, Deicoon had fallen to a cultist uprising of its own. The Company of the Bridge and Kataran 66th moved into the city to assist it's defenders where they could. Noticing the cultists doing something important atop a chapel, Confessor Ornastus had the 66th transport the Company of the Bridge to it. The 66th could not stay with the militia, as they were needed else where, leaving the militia alone to assault the chapel. The militia used secret shortcuts within the chapel to ascend the chapel undetected and ambushed the chaos forces on the roof of the chapel. During the battle, the militia realized the cultists had captured the Titan Legios' members and trapped them there. They attacked a generator that was powering restraints on the Pallidus Mor's Secutarii soldiers, which released the Secutarii. The Secutarii quickly rearmed themselves and assisted the militia in the assault. After killing the cultists and releasing the rest of the Titan crews, they helped the Legios fight their way back to their Titans, before moving to leave the city to avoid the crossfire of the combating Titan forces.

After the loyalist Titan Forces destroyed the Iron Skulls at Deicoon, Confessor Ornastus saw that loyal citizens within the ruined city were still fighting against the cultists. Determined to save as many loyal lives as he could, and kill as many cultists as possible, the Confessor rallied the Company of the Bridge to return to Deicoon. Climbing over flaming rubble and marching through choking ash, the militia reentered the hive city and reengaged the cultists.

The fighting in the city had become brutal, with militia, civilians, and cultists all fighting with whatever they could find or even completely unarmed. During the fighting, Confessor Ornastus located the leader of the cultists, a former colonial of the Kataran Spears. The cultists allowed the Confessor to pass and engage the leader in a one-on-one duel. THe cultist's leader nearly managed to kill Ornastus, but suddenly seemed to be in immense pain. The cultists all began screaming in agony, and the cultist leader flung himself off the roof the duel was being fought upon. Lacking their leader, and having lost momentum from the unexplained shockwave of pain, the cultists were quickly routed by the militia and unorganized civilian defenders.

In the days following, the loyalists (including the surviving members of the Company of the Bridge) of Katara began rounding up and publicly executing the surviving cultists. The loyalist forces were also reinforced by the Imperial Guard's Death Korps of Krieg. Unfortunately, the extent of the chaos corruption that created the Khornate cult was deemed too great (to the point that the planet was almost labeled for Exterminatus). The planet was reclassified as a Penal World, and its loyalist inhabitants were formed into a Penal Legion.
