The Defence of Balle Alpha was a military campaign that took place in 942.M40. It saw Imperial forces defending the planet Balle Prime from an ork invasion, led by the Ork Warlord Ugskraga da Mighty.[1]

Overview

When the orks arrived in orbit of Balle Prime, they quickly overwhelmed the planet's orbital defences and initiated landings. As such, the Imperial defence of Balle Prime was centred on the planet's capital city, Balle Alpha (hence the name of the campaign itself).[1]

A number of Imperial Guard Regiments were committed to the protection of the city from Ugskraga's hordes, most notably the Tallarn 3rd Armoured and the Balle 132nd. The plan was for local regiments, bolstered by conscripted Imperial citizens, to construct and man a series of layered defences around Balle Alpha, while the Tallarn 3rd, under the command of General Hasso Ras-Aziz, was held as a mobile reserve force that could lead a counterattack if the defences were breached.[1]

The orks had little patience for fighting a protracted, drawn-out war and Ugskraga personally led a massive assault from the north and east across the Akhar Basin. The resulting battle was a decisive victory for the Imperials; though the orks would continue to fight on Balle Prime for many months afterwards, they were unable to recover and were ultimately defeated.[1]
