Background

Created during the Second Founding alongside the Black Templars and Crimson Fists, the Excoriators are known as attrition fighters and stubborn to the extreme. The first Chapter Master of the Excoriators was the Imperial Fist Captain Demetrius Katafalque.[2d] Their "survival no matter the odds" mentality stems from the dark days of the Horus Heresy itself. The Marines who would eventually become the Excoriators were stationed on the walls of the Imperial Palace by Rogal Dorn himself with one order: Do not lose.[Needs Citation]

Although it is unclear if this is the Chapter's motto, the Excoriators still fight as if their Primarch himself was expecting them to hold the line.[2]

The Excoriators are listed in the Mythos Angelica Mortis, a tome of ancient knowledge stating that 20 Space Marine Chapters, the Astartes Praeses, had been created to watch over the Eye of Terror.[1]

During the War of the Beast, the Excoriators were one of the Successor Chapters of the Imperial Fists to answer the "Last Wall" Protocol, a meeting in the Phall System that would see the Fists and their successors combine once more into a Legion.[3]

Gene-seed

The Excoriators are known to contain a flaw in their Gene-seed, particularly the Catalepsean Node,[2c] known as The Darkness. Outwardly, The Darkness appears as a wretched palsy, slackness of the jaw, tremor of the limb and a blankness of the eye.[2a] However, to Excoriators who have experienced it, it is described as a sleeping wakefulness or a living nightmare; that while afflicted, they relive one of Dorn's darkest moments, the loss of the Emperor.[2b] Excoriators who become afflicted with the Darkness are cared for by the Santiarch.[2c]
