Flamers are flamethrower weapons, unleashing a liquid incendiary chemical that bursts into flames as it leaves the weapon. Similar flame-based weapons are used by several races and armies. They are valued for their ability to destroy many enemies at once, regardless of any protective cover.
Imperial and Chaos flamers fire a mix of liquid chemicals which ignite on contact with the air. The flaming chemicals stick to the target, completely burning it. The fact that the chemical sticks to its target and continues burning on its own accord, means that those who are not killed instantly die horribly as they are burnt to a cinder. The most common substance used is known as Promethium, which is sticky and similar to modern day napalm. The flamer fires a burst of expanding flames, making the weapon effective at killing enemies in cover.

Flamers and hand flamers
Flamers are the basic version of the flamer. They are portable and hand-held. Hand flamers are more compact pistol versions requiring only one hand.
Flamer in the Imperium
- Flamers are seen as the wrath of the Emperor that consumes his enemies with purifying flames.
- It is the preferred weapon of the pious worshippers of the Emperor such as the Preachers and Zealots like the House of Cawdor of Necromunda.
- Among the Adepta Sororitas(Sister of Battle) the flamer has a prominent function and for a Sister being entrusted of it is a great honour.
- The Salamanders Chapter make a wide use of flamers and melta weapons due to theirs preference for close-ranged combat.
- In the Catachan Regiment the use of flamers and heavy flamers is wide spread.
Flamer Tactica
- The Imperial Creed dictates to use flamers against the mutants and the heretics so that their sins would be cleansed and purged.
- Many imperial commanders promote the use of flamers against Orks and other green-skins, in fact it has been proved a lowering in the Orks' chain of breeding due, according to some Magos Xenobiologis,to the reduction of spores exuded by the corpses.
- Flamer seams one of the few weapons able to stop the swarming monstrosities of the Hive Fleets without an awful expense of ammunition.
- Flamer use is a mandatory tactical choice in condition where spotting the enemy is difficult due to dense terrain (such as jungles), during urban fights and bunker assaults.
- Field Commanders must always remember the devastating impression of a well used flamer a single shot could destroy an entire guardsman squad and army morale as well.
Flamer among the Xenos
- In the Ork's warlike culture the Burna Boyz are seen as fools but also as really tough green-skins, only a very brave Ork would carry in battle the large amount of highly flammable fuel needed to operate the Burnas(ork name for flamer), a blowtorch that can be used to set aflame everything the Ork sees and to slice through thick pieces of scrap and armour as well.
- Among the Eldar, flamers are used by Storm Guardians and Wraithlords.
- Tau Crisis Battlesuits may use flamers.
Flamer and the Traitors
Flamers and Heavy Flamers are widely used among the Traitor Marines with the same tactical use as the Loyalists except some notable cases:
- The Thousand Sons seams to fight only with the standard bolter even in conditions where a wise use of flamers and other weapons (such as heavy bolters) would be required.
- The Khorne Berserkers are too much frenzied to even think of using something different from theirs axes to kill enemies!
- The Noise Marines often opt to use some strange weaponry (such as sonic devices) which unleash devastating waves of harmonics that can cause internal organ rupture.
