Plot Summary

During the secret build-up to the Horus Heresy, Battle-Captain Garro is wounded in battle. His name on the list of those judged unreliable to the Warmaster's cause, his injury makes it impossible to assign him to the combat drop on Isstvan III, to suffer the eventual fate of all the other loyalists in Horus' forces.

A solution is found when he is given joint-command of the Light Frigate Eisenstein, and is posted there with those of his company also judged unreliable. Thus quietly pushed to the sidelines, an attempt on his life is made by Ignatius Grulgor, his joint-commander and fellow officer. This attempt fails, and Grulgor and his fellow assassins find themselves forever damned as a result, becoming the first Plague Marines.

Witnessing the Heresy unfolding around him, and joined by fellow escaped witnesses including Iacton Qruze of the Sons of Horus, Garro seizes control of the damaged Eisenstein and flees the system, in an attempt to bring news of the rebellion to the Emperor. Barely surviving the perils of the Warp, he and his crew are rescued by Rogal Dorn and the Imperial Fists. Taken to Terra to account for themselves, Garro and his men must first survive captivity in a keep of the Silent Sisterhood and a further betrayal by one of their own.

Eventually, the news of Horus's rebellion reaches the heart of the Imperium, and the Imperial forces make ready their response.
