The whole principle of naval fighting is to be free to go anywhere with every damned thing the Navy possesses.
Captain Grenfeld[1a]

Captain Grenfeld was a captain of the Imperial Navy during the Gothic War, where he commanded the Hammer of Justice well, leading to a renewed interest in Nova Cannons across Segmentum Obscuras.[1b][2]

History

Grenfeld attained the rank of captain and command of the Dominator Class Cruiser Hammer of Justice under the command of Lord Admiral Cornelius von Ravensburg of Battlefleet Gothic at some point prior to the outbreak of the Gothic War in 143.M41.[1b][1c] The Hammer of Justice was the only Dominator Class vessel in Battlefleet Gothic, and one of the few in Segmentum Obscurus, where it was relatively rare, and built to act as a support for major fleet actions and planetary assaults.[1b][2] The ship had an undistinguished record, and performed poorly on exercises during this time.[1b]

However, when the war commenced, Grenfeld commanded the Hammer admirably, rising to the challenge, and demonstrating able use of the ship's powerful but unwieldy Nova Cannon.[1b] He used it during the Port Maw Blockade to destroy the Chaos Devastation Class Cruiser Unforgivable, and again at the Raid on Alios.[1b][1c][3]

His command and expert use of this rare ship class led many other vessels in Battlefleet Gothic to undertake major refits, replacing their prow weapons with Nova Cannons throughout the war.[1b] After the war, this led to a reassessment of Dominator Class Cruisers across Segmentum Obscurus, with many other battlefleets showing an interest in what had previously been a class of ship normally used in Ultima Segmentum.[2]
