History

Nemesis Destroyer during the Great Crusade

During the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy, the 22nd Chapter of the Ultramarines Legion was known as the Nemesis Chapter, specialising in Exterminatus operations.[4c] The 22nd was a patchwork of specialised units, most notably maintaining two full companies of the Destroyer squads rarely found in the other Chapters, and had a large Terran contingent - resulting in a culture which Guilliman considered to too far removed from the rest of the Legion.[5b]

The Chapter earned their name during the purgation of abhuman corsairs in the Cancerai Nebula alongside the VIII Legion. As well as the name "Nemesis", they took to wearing black gauntlets, midnight blue helms and adopted the weighing scales and death's head icon of judgement.[4c]

Guilliman viewed the Destroyers as an unpleasant necessity, keeping them off the front lines where possible and expressing an intent to restructure the dedicated Destroyer companies of the Nemesis.[5a] During the campaign against the orks of the Thoas Empire, he kept the Destroyer companies in the void, hunting the orks on the barren moon of Agrigentum V. In the wake of Chapter Master Phalaris' death, Guilliman appointed Eleon Iasus, Captain of the 166th Company, as his replacement as part of an effort to integrate Nemesis into the wider culture of the Legion.[5b] The Destroyer companies were eventually deployed from reserve in the final stages of the Battle of Thoas.[5c]

The Nemesis was only partially mustered at Calth as some of its companies were engaged alongside elements of the 7th Chapter reducing the Fra'al crucible worlds along the galactic rim.[4b] Those companies able to make the journey to Calth were mustered in the highlands of Thracius in order to distance them from population centres.[4c]
