The Octocalvariae is a powerful psychic Xenos and a worshiper of Chaos Undivided, that has become fully corrupted by the powers of the Warp.[1]

Overview

The Xenos became a threat to the Imperium, when it used its immense psychic abilities and the power of the Warp, to corrupt the population of three Imperial Systems into the worship of the Chaos Gods. However its reign of terror, finally ended when the Blood Angels' Chief Librarian Marest, led his Chapter's forces to battle against the Octocalvariae and its damned followers. At the war's end, the Octocalvariae's followers were dead at the Blood Angels' hands, but the Chapter discovered the Xenos itself was unkillable. The Octocalvariae's corrupt nature healed any wound dealt to it and only at great cost, were the Blood Angels able to capture and bind the Xenos. Marest himself was mortally wounded in battle with the Xenos, but before he was put within a life saving Sarcophagus, he ordered that a prison be constructed that could hold the Octocalvariae. Named the Vault of Marest, it was constructed beneath the Blood Angels' Fortress Monastery and has held the Octocalvariae, which has had no access to food or water, for three thousand years. After its imprisonment, the Blood Angels have tried various ways to kill the Octocalvariae, but each has ended in failure; as have attempts to discover what Xenos species, the heavily mutated creature was spawned from. All the while, the Octocalvariae laments the deaths of its followers and vows it will one day be free.[1]

During the Blood Angels preparation to face an invasion by Hive Fleet Leviathan, Mephiston interrogated the Octocalvariae; to determine if his psychic vision of the Bloodthirster Ka'Bandha invading Baal as well, was true. The Xenos was known to be a prophet of incredible accuracy, but it only offered to help in exchange for its freedom. However, Mephiston did not require its cooperation and used his immense psychic powers to forcibly delve into the Octocalvariae's mind. Each of the Xenos' many eyes could see into the Realm of Chaos and Mephiston used them to locate Ka'Bandha and saw that the Bloodthirster was trying to emerge from the Warp and invade Baal. When the Bloodthirster saw Mephiston gazing upon it, Ka'Bandha gave a roar that severed the Blood Angel's connection to the Octocalvariae. The Xenos then laughed and said it had foreseen that Ka'Bandha would one day kill Mephiston and the Blood Angel's soul would join the Bloodthirster's hordes as they brought down the Imperium. Mephiston denied this, but before he left the Octocalvariae's cell, the Xenos claimed that the darkness within the Blood Angel would one day make them allies.[1]
