History

The Plague Planet is a Daemon World deep inside the Eye of Terror that was claimed by the Daemon Primarch Mortarion after the Horus Heresy.[3] He has made it into a world of poison, horror, and misery swathed in a miasma of disease-filled clouds.[2]

The rotting hull of spacecraft which succumb to plague are eventually drawn, sometimes over thousands of years,[1] to the Plague Planet, where they become part of the Plague Fleets.[2] These fleets carry followers of Nurgle through the warp to inhabited worlds where their destructive raids are inevitably followed by outbreaks of deathly contagion. Plague Ships that are abandoned or have their crews destroyed drift back to the Plague Planet once more.[1]

Society & Geography

Mortarion has shaped the planet much as his homeworld, Barbarus. All is ruled by the skeletal Mortarion, enthroned upon the highest part of the planet, much like his false father was on Barbarus.[3] Much of the planet is dominated by Shrines to Nurgle and gargantuan mountaintops. The seven greatest mountains each hold a keep of one of the Plague Companies. The greatest of these, the Black Manse, stretches between the three highest peaks and serves as Mortarion's personal keep.[5] The Black Manse is also known as the Whispering Tower and can be reached through the Garden of Nurgle in the Immaterium.[4]

The Plague Marines of the Death Guard rarely involve themselves with the population except to select new Champions to fight alongside them,[1] residing in mighty fortress citadels alongside Daemonic Champions of Nurgle.[3] Aspirants fight for their right to join the Death Guard's ranks on the tri-lobed platforms of rusted iron in the suppurating valleys of the Plague Planet.[5]

The rest of the population cower in tiny villages, serving their supreme masters.[3] These inhabitants are afflicted with all manner of horrific poxes and pray to Nurgle for relief from their constant agony. Some of them are favoured and become his Champions, and then fight among themselves for mastery and the chance to become Daemon Princes themselves. Beastmen known as Pestigors make up a large part of the population; they are bloated with disease and flies swarm around them and breed upon their rotting flesh. The beastmen are very proud of these signs of their god's favor, and openly boast of the number and severity of their diseases.[1] Diseased things that should be dead roam the planet and clouds of contagion pollute the air, none but the Death Guard could survive even a single breath on the Plague Planet's surface.[5]

The defenses of the Plague Planet are formidable, with Defense Laser batteries mounted on nearly every mountaintop of the world. In orbit hang large Orbital Defense Platforms and shipyards from which the Plague Fleet is stationed.
