The story centres around the Raven Guard, who after being betrayed on Isstvan V find themselves with only 3,000 marines remaining of the 80,000 which travelled to the planet. Meanwhile on the Raven Guard's home world Deliverance, praefector Marcus Valerius is haunted by the dream of dying ravens. Believing these nightmares to be significant he attempts to convince his superior to send support to Isstvan V, fearing the rest of the legion and Corax are in trouble.[1]
Having been ordered by Corax to remain on Deliverance, Commander Branne of the Raven Guard is extremely skeptical of Valerius's dreams, dismissing them outright at first. After much deliberation however they make course for Istvaan V where the drop ships are initially mistaken as an enemy trick by Corax and the remaining Raven Guard on the surface. Valerius sends a message over the ships' comm to Corax and his number informing him that the fleet operate under the lead of Commander Branne. They make for the ships and escape the planet, Corax proclaiming "We shall return!" on departure.[1]
