Rebel Winter is the third novel in the Imperial Guard (Novel Series), published in July 2007. Written by Steve Parker, it was his first novel for the Black Library.

Book Description

Captain Sebastev of the Vostroyan Firstborn has risen through the ranks, much to the chagrin of some of his fellow officers. His mettle is truly put to the test during a posting on the ice-encrusted battlefields of Danik's World, fighting against a fierce rebellion. Caught between rebels and hordes of orks, Sebastev's company is tasked with holding the line, while the rest of the Vostroyan army makes a tactical retreat. But the withdrawal goes horribly wrong, and Sebastev and his men are cut off and stranded behind enemy lines. Worse still, when new orders come in, the captain must not only try to ensure the survival of his company but escort a traitor back to Vostroyan high command or all efforts in the war thus far will have been for nothing![1]

Sinopsis

Spoiler!
This page contains spoilers for: Rebel Winter (Novel)

The story follows Captain Gregorious Sebastev of the Sixty-Eighth Vostroyan Firstborn as Imperial forces move in to liberate Danik's World from rebel and Ork control. The main bulk of the story takes place approximately 1 year after the first elements of Imperial forces arrived on the planet. Early on into the second year, almost the entire Sixty-Eighth is destroyed in a surprise attack during a tactical withdrawal after a crushing rebel and Ork victory on opposing sides of the planet. This leaves Captain Sebastev along with Colonel Maxsim Kabanov to lead the remaining 5th Company to retreat, along with their Danikkan prisoner, toward Grazzen and the safety of Imperial lines. After several grueling battles which leave only around two dozen men of the Sixty-Eighth alive, the Vostroyans succeed in crossing over into Imperial Lines and safety.

It is revealed during the epilogue of the story that the Danikkan prisoner was actually a mind-altered spy for the Imperial forces who had infiltrated the upper echelons of the rebel forces posing as a secret police officer. For reasons unknown, the spy breaks down and begins to weep because of the "things he did" possible hinting at genocide or Chaos corruption. There is also the possibility of a sequel to Rebel Winter as Captain Sebastev and the remainder of the Sixty-Eighth are put under the command of Space Marine reinforcements.
