Shadowbrink was a Cathedral World of the Imperium. The planet itself was home to mysterious relics dating back to the Dark Age of Technology known as the Maelstrom Cradle, which were able to access the Warp. Due to the importance of these artifacts, Shadowbrink was home to a garrison of Grey Knights, Imperial Guard, and Destroyers to bolster the local PDF and Frateris Militia.[1]

In 998.M41, Shadowbrink was not evacuated despite the approach of Hive Fleet Leviathan, as the local Grey Knights force was concerned that the Maelstrom Cradle could activate a Daemonic incursion if left unguarded. In the ensuing Fall of Shadowbrink, the planet was devastated not only by the Tyranids but also by Daemonic forces.[1] Years later thanks to the formation of the Great Rift Daemons again walked the surface of Shadowbrink, but were again defeated by the Tyranids.[2]
