Due to the importance of these artifacts, Shadowbrink was home to a garrison of Grey Knights, Imperial Guard, and Destroyers to bolster the local PDF and Frateris Militia.[1]
In 998.M41, Shadowbrink was not evacuated despite the approach of Hive Fleet Leviathan, as the local Grey Knights force was concerned that the Maelstrom Cradle could activate a Daemonic incursion if left unguarded. In the ensuing Fall of Shadowbrink, the planet was devastated not only by the Tyranids but also by Daemonic forces.[1] Years later thanks to the formation of the Great Rift Daemons again walked the surface of Shadowbrink, but were again defeated by the Tyranids.[2]
