The Shotgun is a solid slug weapon that has been in use for thousands of years. Its roots are traced back to well before M25 and it is theorized to exist before M3. The Shotgun fires a very large lead slug or a number of small metal pellets held in a casing. When the shell is fired, you pull on a pump mechanism to extract the casing, and load a new shell.

The Shotgun is used primarily by the Imperial Guard due to its ease of use, although it is not very popular as most troops prefer to take a Lasgun or some other substitute weapon. It is not highly accurate but it is easier to fire from the hip than the Lasgun. It is easy to produce however and is an ideal weapon for worlds without the technological base to produce las weapons.

They Arbites Shotgun is used by the Adeptus Arbites for crowd control and they have developed various rounds useful for such a task.

Shotguns are most commonly described in shell size, or gauges. The most common style was a 12-gauge pump shotgun, the lower the gauge, the bigger the barrel. For example, and 8-gauge shotgun firing solid-slugs was effectivley a 1.25inch cannon.

Various fully and semi-auto guns were devoloped around the years of the shotguns development.

Some shotguns have the capabilty to fire solid shells, effectivley creating a high caliber cannon.
