Clan Vurgaan Symbol

The Vurgaan Clan, known as the Brothers of Iburaani[3] is a Clan of the Iron Hands Chapter. They are recognized as the 9th Company of the Chapter.[3]

Overview

The Vurgaan are known as the most hot-headed of Medusans and by order of the Iron Council those of the Clan elevated to Space Marines have their fire tamed via surgery and implantation that see their emotions regulated by Cogitators. Thus on the battlefield they are known for their icy demeanor well-suited for Fire Support Squad duties where precision matters over wrath. They follow strategy without question, securing vantage points from which their heavy weaponry can dominate the battlefield. Once their enemy has been shattered, the Vurgaan press their attack. They move from one fortified high ground to another, with more mobile Eliminator and Suppressor squads providing cover for Devastator and Hellblasters. Where other Space Marines might succumb to hatred, Vurgaan keeps cold calm and discipline.[3]

In a formation known as the Iburaani Star, Vurgaan transports and tanks bear their passengers into the heart of the foe or roll in to block a crucial breach before taking position. The armored fighting vehicles then seamlessly array themselves around a central point, hulls jutting out to resemble a cog's teeth. Infantry takes position within, coldly scouring fire lanes to all incoming resistance. Thus does this formation resemble the Medusan volcano from which they take their name. Yet these practices are not without consequence, for if they are transferred into another Clan their implants are removed. Even without these augmetics, they remain dispassionate and aloof and this may make other Battle-Brothers uneasy in their presence. Those rendered little more than Automata may be expunged from the Battle Line entirely and relegated to Chapter armouries as little more than a Servitor.[3]

The members of Vurgaan take great pride in their clan and its history. As a result, they keep themselves apart from the other clan companies, when not called to war.[1a] The Clan is also known to collect captured equipment from their foes, even that of Xenos. Rather than being impressed into Iron Hands service however, these trophies are offered as sacrifices of appeasement to the bloodthirsty Machine Spirit of the Clan's Land Behemoth. The brutality of their Monastery's Machine Spirit is reflected in the Clan itself, which has a reputation for extreme violence.[2]

They have a long and noble history of battle, in service to their Chapter. These battles include, the Grailsword Campaign, the Third War for Armageddon[1a] and the defense of Medusa during the 13th Black Crusade[1b].
