The Assault on the Hellspire was a battle between the forces of the Imperium and Chaos on the Hive World Orana.[1]

Overview

When Orana came under attack from a massive Chaos invasion, three-dozen Regiments of the Imperial Guard and twenty Companies of Space Marines from seven different Chapters were mustered to liberate the planet. Foremost amongst these were the Blood Angels, led by Commander Dante himself. However, no sooner had the Blood Angels made planetfall than the skies grew dark as contact with the fleet in orbit was severed; with neither vox transmission or teleport beam capable of reaching Orana's surface. Soon the Imperium's forces eyes were drawn to Orana's capital Hive city, which stood wreathed in the fires of the Warp on the horizon. As the Warpblaze subsided all could see that the Hive had changed into a Hellspire; where stone and metal once stood, now there were walls of fused bone and flesh. Horrific as this transformation was, the greater threat lay in the hordes of Daemons and Chaos Space Marines that began pouring out from the damned Hive.[1]

The Imperium's forces fired upon the Hellspire, but its surface quickly flowed like molten wax to heal the wounds. During one such attack, when the Hellspire's skin was rent for a few seconds, a pulse of psychic energy flooded the battlefield. To the mind of the Blood Angels' Furioso Librarian Dreadnought Galen, the power of the energy spoke of a Daemon Lord that was being summoned by a ritual being conducted in a cathedral at the Hellspire's peak. Dante recognized that the destruction of this threat was of paramount importance, but a void barrier protected the cathedral. The reactor powering the shield was located within the bowels of the spire and as the rest of the Imperium's forces fought the servants of Chaos, Dante created a plan to destroy the reactor. Soon three Stormraven Gunships, took flight and attacked the Hellspire opening a great rent in its surface, which they flew through before the wound was healed. Within the Hellspire, the Stormravens emptied their holds of a Blood Angles strike force and the Furioso Librarian Galen led them relentlessly towards the reactor, which he personally destroyed. With the void shield gone, Dante and his Sanguinary Guard descended upon the Hellspire's upper reaches; where they fell upon the servants of Chaos enacting the ritual.[1]

Despite the ferocity of their attack they were too late however, as the Daemon Lord had already begun pulling itself through the Warp portal, the ritual had opened. Though all seemed lost, Dante launched himself at the monstrous foe and buried the Axe Mortalis deep into the Daemon Lord's chest. The Axe Mortalis pierced the Daemon's black heart, causing it let out a howl of pure agony before the abomination was cast back into the Warp. With the Daemon Lord's banishment, the Chaos hordes upon the Hive World's surface exploded into mists of blood and contact with the Imperium's fleet was soon re-established. The survivors from the battle were extracted and the Hellspire was obliterated by the fleet with an orbital bombardment. With the Hellspire's destruction, the hold Chaos had upon Orana was gone and the world was saved.[1]
