Auramagma

Auramagma was the Captain of the 8th Fellowship of the Thousand Sons Space Marine Legion during the Great Crusade. Alongside Khalophis he too was a member of The Pyrae. Last seen apparently stricken unto death, he is presumed to have not survived the Burning of Prospero,[1] although reports of a pyrokinetic once-Captain of the Legion called Malagor Auramagma existing on the Planet of Sorcerers after the days of the Horus Heresy confuse this issue somewhat.[2]

History

Auramagma was the Captain of the Thousand Sons' 8th Fellowship. He was a member of the Cult of Pyrae alongside fellow Captain Khalophis.[1a] Auramagma was regarded by more senior members of the Thousand Sons, such as Ahzek Ahriman, as a reckless firebrand,[1b] and arrogant [1d]. Auramagma was noted to mockingly suggest that he and his fellow Captains attending The Council of Nikaea should remove one of their eyes as a symbol of solidarity with Magnus.[1c]

He possessed significant psychic abilities that he was able to physically manifest liquid jets of fire which reportedly could melt ceramite as if it were wax. [1e] His full and unbridled power was unleashed on members of the Space Wolves Legion to great effect during their assault on the Thousand Sons home world.[Needs Citation]

Auramagma is known to have directly confronted Leman Russ, the Space Wolves' Primarch during the fighting. Fellow Captain Phosis T'Kar witnessed Auramagma strike the Wolf King with wreath of psychic fire, engulfing him completely. For a brief moment, it was believed that this was a significant and potentially fatal blow to Russ. It appears that the chill armour worn by Russ reflected Auramagma's attack like a mirror and thus he himself was consumed in his own spell. "Auramagma howled in such agony that all who heard his screams were moved to pity as the aether devoured his very essence."[Needs Citation]

Fate

He was last seen, in what witnesses described as a blazing pyre of agony, fleeing the battlefield. The Space Wolves members parted before him, none apparently willing to go so near a damned soul. [1e]

Auramagma was not noted to be amongst the surviving members of the Thousand Sons Legion when they arrived on the Planet of Sorcerers. Despite the severe injury he received while duelling with Russ, his presumed demise is unconfirmed. His fate is further thrown into question by the appearance of a Chaos Champion of Tzeentch known as Malagor Auramagma, a pyrokine who once served as a Captain in the Thousand Sons legion and who is noted to have survived almost certain death on more than one occasion.[2]

Notes

Malagor Auramagma's appearance dates from 1st edition; considering the lack of first name used and his means of exiting the narrative, the more recent character of Auramagma from A Thousand Sons may simply be a nod to one of the few originally named pre-existing Thousand Sons rather than either a full retcon or an attempt to flesh the character out more. Regardless, it is interesting to note that in Malagor Auramagma's appearance he "once again had stared into the brink of death yet triumphed over it in the end."
