Cartheginus was a once affluent trading outpost world in the Quintillus System, which is located just outside Segmentum Solar.[1]

History

Early in the Imperium's history the world was used as a distribution depot, for the vast number of resources its Expeditionary Fleets needed to fight during the Great Crusade. Because of this, Cartheginus became a trading outpost and soon became an affluent world. This all ended however, when the Horus Heresy began.[1]

During the Great Crusade, Cartheginus was one of the worlds Horus curried favours for, to ensure his Legion received the very best equipment and supplies. In return he made sure that those in charge, benefited from his patronage. So when the Horus Heresy began, this relationship ensured that Cartheginus readily declared their support for the Warmaster — and ensured the world's immediate destruction. When the Imperium received word of the Cartheginus rulers' traitorous actions, a fleet was dispatched and soon turned the world into a dead cratered ruin. In the aftermath of Cartheginus's destruction, the world became became a reminder to the Traitors that it was the Emperor and not Horus who ruled the galaxy. When the Warmaster's forces later arrived in the the system en masse, they tried to gain control of Cartheginus as a point of pride, but the Imperium fought to make sure it remained a lifeless rock — just as the Emperor demanded.[1]
