Fafnir Rann[5c]

Fafnir Rann was a Captain of the Imperial Fists Legion during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy.[2][4]

History

Born on Inwit, as a baby Fafnir was discovered at the bank of the River of Life. His mother was still clutching him, though she had since died from starvation and stabbing while escaping from the House of Dorn. It was reasoned that his mother fled the Dorns to protect the child, and he was subsequently taken in by a Tribe known as The Rann. He was raised by an adopted mother, who refused those who demanded Fafnir be returned to the Dorn in order to avoid tribal war. He was raised to believe he was chosen to one day rise up against the Dorn. When he transitioned to adulthood, he was made Chief of the Rann and waged war against the Dorn. However shortly after, Rogal Dorn arrived and everything changed. Rann was subsequently inducted into the Imperial Fists.[5b]

Rann became a high-ranking member of his Legion, designated as Lord Seneschal and commander of the First Assault Cadre. In battle, he wielded twin axes and a large shield.[4] At the start of the Horus Heresy, Rann was assigned to the Retribution fleet and subsequently fought in the Battle of Phall, commanding the warship Blade of Perdition. He and his forces were among the last to leave the battlefield when the Imperial Fists retreated.[11] Later, he served alongside Sigismund in the First Sphere defences of the Sol System and took part in the Battle of Pluto.[2] When the Solar War reached its final phase, Rann commanded of one of the Three Sisters of Spite Frigates Persephone and fought Horus' forces around Pluto under the command of Sigismund.[3]

During the Siege of Terra Fafnir Rann was placed in charge of the defence of the Lion's Gate Spaceport. He held the line for much of the battle, but was overwhelmed by a massive traitor attack led by Kroeger, Kharn, and Abaddon. During the battle Rann duelled with Kroeger and was wounded, but ultimately was saved thanks to the intervention of Sigismund.[5a] Later, Rann oversaw the defences of Gorgon Bar alongside Sanguinius against a large attack by the Iron Warriors. During the battle, Rann displayed honour when he helped an Iron Warrior rise to his feet before killing him so that he did not die on his knees.[6] Rann next fought alongside Sigismund and his Templar Brethren as they went from battlezone to battlezone, eliminating key traitor leaders.[7] Alongside Sigismund and Dorn, he became besieged within the Bhab Bastion during the final stages of the Siege.[9]

After the fall of Bhab Bastion, Rann rallied with remaining loyalist officers such as Zephon, Nassir Amit, Namahi, Azkaellon, Maximus Thane, Satel Aimery in the final defence of the Inner Palace under the command of Archamus. During the subsequent battles, he gravely wounded the Word Bearers officer Sor Talgron.[10] Rann and Zephon then led a desperate defense deep within the Sanctum Imperialis, which traitors were able to pour into as the Emperor, Dorn, and Sanguinius boarded the Vengeful Spirit.[12]

Amidst the hopeless fighting for the last remnants of loyal territory, the Blood Angels sense the death of Sanguinius and fully succumb to the Black Rage. Rann is attacked by a crazed Azkaellon, and first is reluctant to strike his friend down before discovering he can't even if he wanted. Their fight is only interrupted by an attack by World Eaters and Death Guard, whom the crazed Azkaellon begins to consume.[12a] Rann and Zephon later are seen taking part in a last stand as Hasgard when Horus is defeated and the traitor host suddenly breaks. Rann leads a vicious counterattack to drive the traitors from Terra.[12b]

After the Heresy, Rann founded and led the Executioners Space Marine Chapter.[1]
