Biography

Horus Heresy

During the Great Crusade, Garand served under Captain Jarulek during the battle of Fotrea Quintus, pacifying it not for the Emperor but for Chaos Undivided. Garand took great pride in the conversion of Fortrea's people, and even more when he learned that they slaughtered every Imperial loyalist when Horus began his rebellion. Following the death of Horus in the Siege of Terra, the Traitor Legions were in disarray, and unable to hold many of the planets they conquered. Fortrea Quintus was one of those worlds, and it was the Blood Angels who reclaimed the planet for the Imperium. Garand would bear a great hatred for the Sons of Sanguinius from that day forward.[1]

Over the next ten thousand years, Garand rose through the ranks of the Word Bearers, becoming the Witch-Prince of Helicia, and eventually earned the rank of Warmaster himself, with command of a thousand hosts.[1]

Arkio Insurrection

Garand entered into a plan with the daemon Malfallax and heretical Inquisitor Ramius Stele to turn the Blood Angels to the Chaos Gods by turning a Blood Angel into the reincarnation of Sanguinius. To solidify the position of Arkio, the chosen Marine, Garand sacrificed the Ninth host under the Dark Apostle Iskavan, the weakest of his armies. As part of the plan, Garand ordered Iskavan to retreat from Cybele to Shenlong, in violation of Word Bearer doctrine. When Iskavan attempted to summon a Bloodthirster of Khorne to aid his beaten force, Garand used his own psychic abilities to turn back the summoning and used the summoned daemon to carry a part of his essence, where he revealed to Iskavan that he was to be sacrificed.

In prelude to the meeting between Arkio's followers and Mephiston's forces, Garand and his host lay in wait for the Blood Angels on Sabien. During the battle, Arkio was killed by his brother Rafen and his followers returned to their Chapter. Malfallax intended to use the Black Rage to bring them to Chaos, but was banished back to the Warp, leaving Garand and his host at the mercy of an entire force of Blood Angels succumbed to the Black Rage. Knowing that the battle was unwinnable, Garand ordered a retreat.[2]

Following the battle, Garand received a summons from Abaddon the Despoiler, Warmaster of Chaos, to explain why he had failed to bring allies for the 13th Black Crusade. Garand resigned himself to explaining his failure to Abaddon.[2]
