Grief's Landing is an isolated Imperium world that was founded by the infamous Rogue Trader Dyaman Grief. Its only points of interest are several Ecclesiarchy shrines and a convent of the Order of the Crimson Shroud.[1]

History

For centuries Grief's Landing knew only peace, but this all changed when the world became a target during the Tau Empire's Second Expansion, due to its location on the edges of the Damocles Gulf. However, the Tau did not considered it important enough to warrant a full-scale assault and instead dispatched a Kroot Warband to pacify the world for them. The Kroot's Warsphere, was soon in Grief's Landing's orbit and sent down a large number of the Xenos, who began to easily overwhelm its population; despite the efforts of the Crimson Shroud, Battle Sisters and hastily-armed civilians. Finally after several days of fighting, the Canoness of the Crimson Shroud ordered her Sisters and the few remaining civilian defenders to fall back to the world's first and oldest shrine. There on the sands of Carrion Beach, the defenders prepared to make their final stand within the shrine, as the Kroot attacked them once again. Just as their fate seemed sealed however, the Freeblade known as the Obsidian Knight emerged from the ocean near the shrine and launched a devastating attack on the surprised Kroot. Several of the Xenos were instantly killed and the others were thrown in disarray by the Freeblade's firepower. Sensing that the Obsidian Knight was close to breaking the Kroot, the Sisters and remaining defenders charged out of the shrine and attacked the Xenos as well. Under this onslaught the Kroot forces were routed and retreated from the beach.[1]

Despite their defeat however, the Obsidian Knight remained on Grief's Landing until the last of the Kroot had been driven back into the void. He would see off several further attacks from the Kroot's Warsphere and stood as a bulwark amongst the ranks of the Sisters of Crimson Shroud and Grief's Landing's surviving citizens. Eventually the Kroot Warband could sustain no further casualties and retreated, leaving the remote world to the Imperium. To commemorate their victory and the debt of gratitude they owed the Freeblade, a stained glass window, depicting the towering Obsidian Knight in battle with a Kroot, was created and installed within the shrine on Carrion Beach.[1]
