Initiates are the designation Black Templars use for the Space Marines in their Fighting Companies. An Initiate is the backbone of a fighting company and can have a Neophyte in his tutelage. They play a role similar to Tactical Marines and can, after honing their skills, move into a more focused area of combat, such as with a jump pack, heavy weapons or bikes.1
It is the duty of the Initiate to pick, train and decide when a neophyte has completed his training. The final implant, the Black Carapace, marks the final stage in a neophyte's training and shortly after he receives his power armour. This is when a neophyte becomes an initiate.1
