Overview

The Land Raider is a heavy tank used by the Space Marines. It is designed such that it can move at a good speed while still carrying heavy armaments as well as a number of warriors within its armoured hull. It is an STC vehicle, like many others in the Imperial forces and has been modified several times since its rediscovery.

History

Origins

The Land Raider was first designed and built during the Dark Age of Technology when humankind first moved into space. Its construction method was incorporated into the great STC systems and was presumably deployed over hundreds of worlds. When the Age of Strife came upon the galaxy, production of this vehicle ceased with many worlds overrun by the forces of Chaos. During the Great Crusade the Land Raider STC design was rediscovered, allowing their manufacture. These vehicles were incorporated into Imperial forces and used as heavy transports and linebreakers as well as mobile command centres and sometimes Titan hunters in larger engagements.

Military Employment

The Land Raider in the 41st Millenium

Land Raiders are used by both the Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines due to their rediscovery prior to the Horus Heresy. Since then it has been in service with most Space Marine chapters and continues to be used and modified to the detriment of the Emperor's foes.

The Land Raider has been modified several times, most of which are recognised by the Techpriesthood of Mars. Some of these are the Land Raider Crusader, Land Raider Helios,Land Raider Prometheus and Land Raider Terminus Ultra.

Currently, the Land Raider is only used by the 1st Company of a Space Marine chapter.

Technical Information

Armament

The Land Raider is armed with a hull-mounted twin-linked Heavy Bolter and two side sponsons each with twin linked Lascannons. It may also take a pintle mounted Storm Bolter. The Lascannons are of the Godhammer Kz9.76 design, requiring replacement barrels after 2000 shots.

Armour

The armour of a Land Raider is second to none. It is thick enough to withstand several hits from the strongest weapons of the Imperial armoury as well as a good deal of that of various alien armies. There is also no advantage to attacking the rear of the vehicle.

Equipment

The Land Raider is imbued with the Power of the Machine Spirit and can also be upgraded with Dozer Blades, Extra Armour, a Hunter-killer Missile, a Searchlight and Smoke Launchers.

Further Information

Transport Capacity

The Land Raider has an impressive carrying capacity, either 10 Space Marines in Power Armour or 5 Terminators in Terminator Armour.

Fire Points

The Land Raider is totally self contained and as such has no fire points.

Access Points

Even for such a heavily armoured vehicle, there are still three entrances, two side doors and one special front assault ramp for use when you leave the vehicle and charge straight into combat.

Other

Every Land Raider is crewed by two Space Marines, and has its own Machine Spirit that allows it to fire and/or move if the crew is somehow disabled.

Chapter Variations on Land Raiders

Black Templars

The Black Templars were the original creators of the Land Raider Crusader, and make more extensive use of it than other chapters.

Dark Angels

The Dark Angels Deathwing is entirely composed of Terminators rather than Veteran Squads, and as such they make extensive use of Land Raider transports.

Salamanders

The Salamanders chapter uses an altered version of the Codex Astartes with 12 squads in the 1st company instead of 10, increasing the maximum number of Land Raiders available to 12.
