The Land Speeder was the primary reconnaissance, scouting, resupply and fast attack vehicle of the Imperial Space Marine Chapters. Land Speeders were based on STC data recovered in M31 and have since become widely produced and used throughout the Imperium. Land Speeders were also originally used by the Imperial Guard, but since then the plasma and anti gravity technologies required to use them become increasingly rare and so only extremely resource rich planets or organizations such as Ryza or the Space Marines could afford to create them. As they were rediscovered after the Horus Heresy there are no Land Speeders in Chaos Space Marines armies (however, recent background indicates that there were Land Speeders prior to the Heresy - if this is the case, then no explanation for their absence in Chaos Space Marine armies has yet been given).

Specifications

Land Speeders had light armour all around and a crew of two Power Armoured Space Marines (with the exception of the Tempest Variant, which had a crew of one pilot and slaved targetting systems). Land Speeders were usually armed with a heavy bolter or a multi-melta, although other variants were produced over the years. They include various suspensors and propulsors that could propel the gravship to an altitude of around 100 metres at upwards of 300 kilometres per hour, its primary defence against hostile fire being this speed and agility.

Battlefield Formations

A Land Speeder Squadron, which can be up to 3 Speeders strong, provides valuable fast infantry support; they can be found in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th companies of a Chapter.
