Legate Investigator
A Legate Investigator is an Acolyte of the Inquisition in the Ordo Calixis who has been given the authority of an Inquisitor for a period of time and for a particular investigation. As sign of their authority, Legate Investigators bear a Sigil of Question. They are nicknamed cult-breakers, hounds and brothers of question. Giving even a fraction of the absolute authority of an Inquisitor is a serious matter; only the most trusted servants are considered.[1]

Background
Legate Investigators are used by Inquisitors if the investigation is too big for them alone. Success as an Acolyte as a Legate Investigator can be a recommendation for later promotion to the Inquisitor. On the other hand, failure is severely punished.[1]
It can also be a thankless task: it may be that after time-consuming and nerve-wracking effort, it turns out that there is no reason for the Inquisition to intervene. Or the Legate Investigator gets the job of completing a case and bringing all loose ends to a conclusion while the inquisitor is already busy with the next case. It may also happen that the Legate Investigator is used as bait: with his investigations, he becomes the target of the enemy, so that the Inquisitor can find it easier.[1]
Authority
The powers conferred include maximum command over local law enforcement, detention and interrogation. When the investigation is over, authority is officially withdrawn from the Legate.[1]
As a sign of their authority, a Legate Investigator carries a Carta of Inquiry (their Legature), which contains a description of the place and extent in which the Legate may operate. The Sigil of Question is a silver badge that depicts a chalice with the symbol of the Inquisition. This seal may take various forms, such as a ring or medallion, and holds a code-key system for verification and secure data-access.[1]
