History
During the last years of the Macharian Crusade, Richter, a former protégé of Lord Commander Solar Macharius, turned traitor and created his own private stronghold on Loki. The Crusade's invasion to reclaim the planet turned into a grim, prolonged war of attrition, involving trench warfare, the repeat use of poison gas by the enemy, and transport problems that prevented reinforcements or supplies from reaching the Imperial invasion force. This added to the problems already created by the planet's polluted ecosystem, which made the air toxic without rebreather masks and incapacitated many of the Lord Commander's men with infection and parasites. Richter's forces, apparently making a full conversion to Chaos, capitalized on the Imperial force's handicaps with packs of Nurglite cultists and germ warfare shells.[1]
It was, in short, a conflict in which none of Macharius's legendary tactical brilliance and command of logistics was put to use, and was one of many factors that led to a breakdown of morale and a questioning of the Lord Commander's abilities, eventually resulting in the Crusade force's refusal to follow Macharius in advancing into the Halo Zone.[1]
