8th Edition Makari miniature[4]

Makari, also known as Makari the Grot is an infamous Ork Gretchin.[1] He is thought to be the luckiest Gretchin ever, surviving for nine years under the Warboss Ghazghkull Thraka before being accidentally sat on by his master and subsequently fed to a Squig.[1] This incident may have been only rumour or Imperial propaganda, as Makari is still seen to follow Ghazghull into battle.[3] He is also the bearer of the Ghazghkull's warbanner, Da Lucky Stikk.[2]

History

Origins

Makari was born a nameless Grot on Urk in the service of the Mad Dok Grotsnik. His miserable and lowly existence changed forever when he found the apparently dead Ghazghkull in a trash heap behind Grotsnik's operating shed, another victim of one of the Mad Dok's botched operations. However when he got too close to the corpse it came back to life, and at that moment the Grot starred into his single remaining eye. He experienced the same vision of Ghazghkull, of a Galaxy swept up in a tide of Orks and the Great Green itself moving into the Materium. After the vision Ghazghkull swore the Grot to his service, giving him the name of Makari as well as a burning claw-mark that "comes and goes". Having been given a name and purpose, Makari loyally followed this new master. His first order was to write down Ghazghkull's vision, using the Warbosses blood, his finger, and a sheet of scrap metal to record the prophecy in Ork Orkoid glyphs, creating Da Lucky Stikk. Also during this time Ghazghkull gifted Makari with a necklace made from shell fragments of the bullet that had pierced his brain. Makari treasured the unprecedented act of Ork generosity and carries it with him to this day.[5a]

Now Ghazghkull's official "banner-waver", Makari enthusiastically fulfilled his duties at the front of Ghazghkull's mobs as they set about unifying Urk and then flee the dying world for greater fights. Aboard the Space Hulk known as Wurld Killa, Makari witnesses Ghazghkull defeat a Bloodthirster of Khorne. As the Orks celebrated their victory and prepared to depart Urk's orbit aboard Wurld Killa, Grotsnik made his move. He decided that Makari was a hindering influence and threw the Grot into space as the Boss was distracted. It would be the first of Makari's many deaths.[5b]

The Many Deaths of Makari

After a long time of remembering nothing but being inside a fungus hole in the Great Green, Makari suddenly awoke on Armageddon, having been reincarnated into a new body. He narrowly survived a group of Orks that came and mowed down all the Gretchin in his birthing tunnel, with a bullet instead deflecting off a piece of metal and hitting one of the Orks in the leg. The Orks were on a mission from Ghazghkull himself to find a "lucky Grot" and bring him to the Warboss' side. Having done just that, the Orks chased the Grot into Ghazghkull's throneroom and he came before the Prophet of the Waaagh! once more. Ghazghkull gave his claw burn mark to the Grot, and in that moment Makari regained all his memories of his previous life.[5b]

This time however, Makari witnessed his boss falling into both a physical and mental decline as he began to doubt himself and purpose thanks to the meddling of Commissar Yarrick. Ghazghkull's Waaagh! on Armageddon as well as the general distraction the stalemate was causing Ghazghkull's greater mission. Ghazghkull finally left Armageddon with his inner circle, but was pursued by Yarrick to Golgotha. Under the increasing influence of Grotsnik, Ghazghkull decided to return to Armageddon for an even bigger fight in an apparent abandonment of the mission the gods had given him. This caused Makari to talk back to his boss, which caused Ghazghkull to kill Makari and ignore the will of the Gods.[5c]

Makari was again reincarnated, though this time with his memories intact and into the body of a fully mature Grot fighting on the frontlines of the Second War for Armageddon. Having been brought back by Ghazghkull himself, it soon became apparent the Prophet had reincarnated Makari just to satisfy the demands of his lieutenant Bullets, who genuinely missed the Grot. This realization annoyed Makari, who promptly killed himself by leaping in front of a hail of incoming bullets. Makari would subsequently be resurrected by Ghazghkull over and over, each time killing himself to prove a point. The situation changed when Ghazghkull spoke directly to the newly reincarnated Makari for the first time, stating that as a true Ork he wouldn't apologize but that he had been wrong about some things. He showed Makari the Holy War he had created on Armageddon, but admitted it could be so much greater. At that moment a Leman Russ Battle Tank appeared, blasting a hole in Ghazghkull's chest. Ghazghkull was saved by Makari, who crawled inside the tank to murder the crew within. Seeing the incident as a message from the gods, the recovering Ghazghkull admitted he had been wrong to both Makari and the Gork and Mork. He announced his attention to depart Armageddon and begin Da Great Waaagh!.[5d]

Psychic Awakening

Makari accompanied Ghazghkull throughout his adventures on the Great Waaagh! including the Octarian War. However during the Battle of Krongar Makari witnessed Ghazghkull die at the hands of Ragnar Blackmane before he himself suffered another death by being buried under rubble. Without Ghazghkull to bring him back, Grotsnik used Ghazghkull's amputated arm and Bullets to mimic the reincarnation ritual, eventually succeeding in resurrecting the Grot. Makari next aided Grotsnik in his operation to bring back Ghazghkull, bigger and badder than ever.[5e]
