History
In the 41st Millennium
The Marauder Bomber has a long range and good maximum payload and is the workhorse of the Imperial Navy. They are often used in three roles:
- Strategic Bombing: long-range attacks on enemy cities and institutions while operating at high altitudes beyond most anti-aircraft weapons ranges and with Thunderbolts covering them.
- Free range interdiction: squadrons seek targets of opportunity such as supply dumps and convoys. They are not acting in concert with ground forces.
- Dedicated ground attack and support: Very close assistance to ground forces but also very dangerous for both ground and air forces.
Often the ground support missions are very difficult as knowing precisly where to target is quite hard. Some ground units mark targets with weapons fire of coloured smoke, the colour being decided before the battle. Some regiments deploy forward air controllers who can guide the navy onto the correct target, often being a pilot who know how best to attract the attention of their flying comrades. Another method is to pre-warn ground units who disengage a certain distance just before the air-strike but this is quite a dangerous tactic.
The Marauder Bomber is best designed for free attacks as its payload is considered too small to be a strategic bomber and not correct for ground attack roles.
