N'keln is the current captain of the salamanders 3rd company, he was promoted after the previous captain-Kotan Kadai-was killed during a campaign on stratos. After returning to nocturne and being promoted as captain, N'keln gathers the company to set out into the Hadron belt in search of the dragon warriors who had killed captain Kadai, but one of N'keln's sergeants-Brother sergeant Hazon Dak'ir-found a chest which was beleived to hold a clue to the location of their primarch,Vulkan. After the discovery of the chest and the consultation of the Tome of Fire on nocturne the chapter master Tu'shan allows N'keln to take his company and investigate the planet where the chest led them
