Ogryns (homo sapiens gigantus) are the largest and most physically-powerful type of abhuman. They make ideal warriors and are often recruited into Imperial Guard regiments, and used as close-assault, shock troops.1

Background

Ogryns originate from, and evolved on, many Imperial worlds, including Anark Zeta, these worlds often being cold and barren with high-gravity. Due to their unmatched strength and toughness, and their natural instincts for close-combat, they're used in Imperial Guard regiments as close combat, assault troops, sometimes in concert with Storm Troopers to give them a bit of extra punch. They are, however, incredibly stupid. This slurs their speech and makes it impossible to give them complex orders in combat. It is not always wise to rely on Ogryns to hold their positions. A few have a spark of intelligence; these receive augmentative surgery which increases their intelligence further, turning them into Bone'eads, or Sergeants of sorts.

Ogryns have an especial respect for Commissars, who they see as closest to their beloved Emperor. Ogryns are also naturally claustrophobic, meaning they are reluctant to enter the cramped confines of Chimera carriers.

Although repulsively unhygienic, the concentration of the Ogryns' unique abilities can create a formidable, if somewhat ill-disciplined, fighting force.

Bone 'eads

Bone 'eads (derived from "BONEheads") are Ogryn sergeants which have undergone Biochemical Ogryn Neural Enhancement (BONE) treatment, allowing the Ogryn to lead with greater tactical ability. The most successful examples of BONE-treatment are able to spell their own names or count.1

Ogryn Squads

Ogryns can be grouped together into squads of three to ten and one of them may be upgraded to a Bone'ead. They may also be mounted in a Chimera although because of their bulk, only a maximum of six Ogryns can be transported in one vehicle.1

Equipment

Weapons

Ogryns are armed with Ripper Guns, weapons designed to be 'Ogryn-proof', durable enough to survive its use as club by the Ogryn. They also carry frag grenades.1

Armour

Ogryns wear standard flak armour.1

Famous Ogryns

  • Nork Deddog - Nork is an Ogryn bodyguard with an unswerving desire to protect his master, usually the highest ranking member of the officer ranks.2

In 3rd Edition Ogryns were armed with a Ripper Gun and close combat weapon and could replace their Ripper Gun with an Ogryn Close Combat Weapon. The squad consisted of between three and five Ogryns and were still difficult to get into transports.2

In 2nd Edition Ogryn squads consisted of five Ogryns with a Ripper Gun, frag grenades and flak armour but this could be upgraded to mesh armour.3

In 1st Edition up to four Ogryn Squads could be fielded with an Ogryn-Sergeant and four Ogryns in each. Ogryns, besides the BONE-enhanced Ogryn Sergeants, were poorly equipped, limited to weapons and armour from their feral home worlds. Each Ogryn was armed with a hand weapon, Ogryn frag grenades and primitive armour while their Sergeant was equipped with flak armour, a communicator, a hand weapon and Ogryn frag grenades. He could be armoured with mesh armour and was intelligent enough to be issued a Ripper Gun.4
