The Perpetual Spiral Chapter was a chapter of the Word Bearers during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy.

History

As part of the early Imperial Heralds, the Perpetual Spiral distinguished itself in the early Great Crusade. Most famously, it subjugated the Toth System before defending it against the neighboring rebellious Anhur System. Vastly outnumbered by the Anhur's xeno-influenced technologically superior forces, Chapter Master Balas Silak organized a brutal defense that saw the invasion blunted. The subsequent counter-attack decimated the Anhur and eradicated their culture. Following the rediscovery of Lorgar, the Perpetual Spiral was mainly utilized to garrison worlds brought into compliance, though it displayed Silak. Nonetheless, they loyally carried out their duty.[1]

During the Battle of 47-16, the Perpetual Spiral led the final assault. It was after this action that Lorgar took special interest in Captain Sor Talgron. This apparent favoritism allowed resentment between Silak and Talgron to fester. By this point Lorgar had since turned to Chaos, and under the guise of preventing conflict between Talgron and Silak dispatched the former with half the Chapter's strength to Terra. In truth, a reluctant Talgron was dispatched to undertake an act of sabotage on Terra in preparation for the coming rebellion.[1]

The Chapter was known to reject views of the Emperor as a God, and this was most evident with Silak himself. Balas Silak later died in the Drop Site Massacre, and some say this was orchestrated by Lorgar himself due to his lack of reverence for their New Gods.[1]
