A Sentinel is a two legged walker used by the Imperial Guard for scouting and reconnaissance missions.

First Encounters
The first Sentinels produced by Games Workshop had open canopies, although with the coming of 3rd Edition, the cockpit was closed to better represent the armour of the vehicle. The standard Sentinel weapon has always been a rapid firing weapon, either a Multi-laser or an Assault cannon .1
Battlefield Role
The bipedal locomotion afforded by the Sentinel gives it a unique ability to advance into terrain that other armoured vehicles with tracks could not possibly hope to achieve. This is most shown when wars are fought on worlds with large areas of jungle or forest, such as the central region (Equatorial Jungle) on the planet Armageddon. On the other hand, this type of movement does not lend itself well to slippery or loose terrain, such as sand and ice. For a Sentinel to operate effectively on these types of terrain, major modifications must be made.
The armour on a Sentinel has to be light to allow it to maintain a high movement speed and to keep it as small a target as possible. This puts the operator into a dangerous situation as their cockpits are often left open and exposed. As such, pilots often take their orders into their own hands and use their own initiative with regard to their orders. Many pilots have a history as insubordinate mavericks, although due to their invaluable support in scouting this is usually overlooked. When they are not used in a scouting role they are deployed on the flanks of the army to harry enemy formations or act as mobile anti-armour squadrons.
Current Equipment Variations
There are various other versions of the Sentinel used throughout the Imperium. Again, these modifications depend on where the Sentinel was produced and for what battlefield role they will play.
- Mars Pattern Sentinels are the basic Sentinel used throughout the Imperium. It is an open vehicle armed with a Multi-laser.
- Armageddon Pattern Sentinels are used on the world Armageddon as tank hunters, armed with Lascannons. They are often seen with Armoured Crew Compartments to afford better protection to the pilot (as of Codex: Armageddon).
- Cadian Pattern Sentinels are produced on Cadia and mount a rapid firing Autocannon. They too are often seen with an Armoured Crew Compartment and are sometimes seen transport hunting or attacking better armoured foes (as of Codex: Eye of Terror).
- The Catachan Pattern Sentinel is produced on Catachan and mounts a Heavy Flamer. This is useful for getting in close and taking out droves of enemies. They have open topped cockpits to allow better views for scouting.
- Death World Sentinels are used on Death Worlds and have a number of unique variations suited for combat in dense jungle. An example of this is the Catachan Sentinel as of Codex: Catachans. This design is more oriented toward close combat than ranged hunting as it employs a chainsaw like weapon, primarily used for moving through dense jungle but also effective in combat. Also, the chainsaw counts as a Rough Terrain Modification.
- The Drop Sentinel walkers are a variant used exclusively by Drop Regiments of the Imperial Guard such as the Elysian Drop Troops1. More compact then other versions and fitted with Grav-chutes Drop Sentinels are deployed from high orbit or mounted inside Valkyrie airborne assault carriers for the journey to the combat zone. Drop Sentinels are frequently deployed as mobile heavy weapons support for Drop Regiments that otherwise lack ground based armoured vehicles. Unlike other Imperial Guard Sentinels, the normal weapons configuration is either a Heavy Bolter or Multi-melta, however squadrons of Support Sentinels are armed with Missile Launchers or Multiple Rocket Pods1. Drop Sentinels are frequently equipped with Improved Comms to provide better communications to Commanders on the field.
- The Tallarn Sentinel is a variation designed for use by the Tallarn Desert Raiders on open desert terrain. It has wider based feet which allow it to spread its weight over a larger area to prevent it from sinking into the sand. They are also painted in desert colours and have a special engine filter to prevent sand from accumulating and clogging in the engine.
- The Missile Sentinel is armed with a missile launcher and is designed for multiple roles including both tank and infantry hunting.
- The Rocket Sentinel is armed with a Multiple Rocket Pod and is designed for a similar role to the Missile Sentinel, just without so much range and destructive capability.
- Sentinel Powerlifters are used primarily for loading and unloading equipment and supplies from convoys, however their large Hydraulic Claws allow them some protection in close combat, being easily able to crush a man.2
Further Upgrades and Armaments
Each Sentinel may take various vehicle upgrades to improve their battlefield capabilities. These are:
- Armoured Crew Compartments
- Camo Netting
- Extra Armour
- Hunter-killer Missile
- Improved Comms - note: These could be mounted on vehicles attached to the Command HQ to augment a vox system.
- Rough Terrain Modification
- Searchlight
- Smoke Launchers
