Shas'O Kais was a student of Commander Puretide. He was dispatched to quell the troubles on Kronus, and brought along the Fire Caste and the Tau allies, the Vespid and Kroot. He was also dispatched with the Ethereal Aun'el Shi'Ores to secure and hold the capital city on Kronus.

The name 'Kais' was also featured in the first person shooter for the Playstation 2 Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior, where you played as a Tau warrior first fighting the Imperium, then the forces of Chaos. It is unknown whether the two characters are the same, but the novel version states that La'Kais is left mentally broken from his experiences.

Kais wears XV22 experimental armour, of the same type as Commander Shadowsun. Contrary to popular belief, despite being the same size and of similar design to the current XV25 Stealth Suits, XV22 armour is not designed for stealth, lacking the 5 designation. 2 is in reference to the mass class of the suit.
