A Space Marine Captain typically commands an entire company of his battle brothers (a theoretical maximum of 100 Marines). This is a prestigious rank and often the Captain of the First Company is also the Chapter Master.

The Company commander may have other Chapter responsibilities (and correspondingly, an additional title) besides his role as Captain, usually responsible for an area of Chapter logistics.

Within a chapter the Captain is sometimes referred to as "Brother-Captain" in recognition of the fact that all Marines within the chapter are brethren. Within the Grey Knights "Brother-Captain" is used as an official title representing a slightly different rank.

Additionally, the commander of a Space Marine Company's Battle Barge may be referred to as 'Captain' aboard his vessel, regardless of his regular rank.
