List / Seperate articles

For characters with their own articles (such as Larkin ), shouldn't the entry on this page be reduced in size? The text in the list is of comparable size to that in the seperate article, surely a brief character description would be more apporpriate for the list page. The Lemur 02:45, 8 March 2012 (CET)

Yes it should, and this is in fact the eventual plan; however my approach to creating the recent individual articles was to create them 'as I went', when synopsising the first two GG series novels (I intend to do them all, if no-one else does...eventually) and not jump ahead. This means the paragraphs on the list page are more complete as biographies, as they variously cover general info from way more books than just the first two; I decided against shrinking them as it would mean just removing info, thinking to leave them until the separate articles 'caught up'. Of course, the info could just be moved over, but I decided against that as the info in these paragraphs is, on the whole, sub-standard. Seeing as things move so slowly around here, I figured this was acceptable. --Mob 03:38, 8 March 2012 (CET)
Coolski you seem to have it all well in hand, I was just curious after looking at the recent changes. The Lemur 04:11, 8 March 2012 (CET)
No worries, you're completely right about what should be done with the page...it's just going to take a long time. I was actually thinking though, that this page is kind of outdated in concept now...it's very old, and we've gone for the more complete philosophy recently...ie that everyone should be included somewhere, even 'hi-then-dies'. I was thinking an alphabetical list of Tanith soldiers (like what we're trying to do with the Known Members of Insert Space Marine Unit Here pages is more suitable, esp as the series is so huge that everyone of any consequence deserves their own proper article. Do you think it would be really un-navigable to start adding that onto the bottom of this, in view for the page to eventually just be that? Or should we have that as a separate page, with a view to eventually deleting this one? It runs the risk of being an over-complicated route to get to the simplest way to present the information, but this page has just sat here getting bigger, more bloated and not actually all that good for years.--Mob 04:25, 8 March 2012 (CET)

Im personally not a fan of the "every character gets their own page" idea. It really infuriates me when I am on a page that says (as a fictional example) -

then I click on the link and the page says "Brother Jeff is a tactical marine" with no more info - it is a waste of users' time. Thats why i think list pages can be really useful - they give links to the character pages that actually have info and give summaries of the ones that dont.

As to this page specifically - I think it definately deserves to exist (as there will be characters from the novels that aren't nesc. Tanith soldiers but still deserve a mention), but a "Known Tanith" list is also a good idea. I'd suggest we continue working on this list in the fashion you are doing - giving notable characters their own pages and leaving minor ones as simple entries on the list, but we should probably set it up as an alphabetic list by surname to give it a more solid strucrure (doing it by rank means we have to change the article every time a new novel comes out and a character gets promoted). Then we could create a "Notable members of the Tanith 1st" list with the entries on that either linking to the appropriate pages or the entries on this page. Im quite happy to help out reformatting the page if that is any help.

Also - we really need a Tona Criid Page, she's my fave :) The Lemur 04:49, 8 March 2012 (CET)

I like the sound of all this. I've put a mock version of a Known Ghosts list on my user page as an example of what I meant for the 'mention everyone' thing. People that turn up just to get shot would get
  • Bob. Infantryman/Verghast - killed in action during the storming of Ouranberg.
and that's all. I may make that list a user page offshoot and build it up over however long it takes there, rather than confuse things by making it a 'real' page just now.--Mob 05:01, 8 March 2012 (CET)
Im in 100% agreement Bob (or Brother Jeff) always deserve a mention - just not their own articles. I made a Known Members of the Tanith First and Only page anyway, we can fill it in or if it doest get used I can just delete it. The Lemur 05:14, 8 March 2012 (CET)
