Thranx was a Hive World in the Segmentum Solar. It was liberated by the Imperium during the Great Crusade.[3] It suffered a planet-wide rebellion in M36.[1] At some point afterwards, it was the subject of Exterminatus.[3]

History

During the Great Crusade, Thranx was liberated by the Imperium. At that time, Thranx was a thriving Hive World.[1] Thranx was described as being a world completely encased in steel where the citizenry never saw the sky. The governor's hall was described as being so vast, that clouds formed under the ceilings and rain occasionally fell.[3]

During the Horus Heresy, Thranx was invaded by the Warmaster's forces and over a million soldiers lost their lives in battle during a single day.[4]

Rebellion

Sometime during M36, Thranx suffered a planet-wide rebellion. It is believed that the rebels were inspired by an unrecorded alien influence. The rebels captured numerous equatorial heat sinks and heat exchanging ziggurats required to maintain life on the planet. The rebels increased the heat of the planets atmosphere causing millions of citizens to die of heat related maladies.[1]

The Planetary Governor, Count Momery attempted to utilize the loyal garrison units to suppress the rebellion. It is noted that up to 10,000 Leman Russ tanks were deployed to regain control of the planet, however these efforts failed with a loss of 70% of the deployed force. As the situation continued to deteriorate, A request was made for reinforcements.[1]

An Iron Hands Battle Barge was returning from a tunnel fighting campaign on Kolyma. Their forces were also depleted, however their Land Raider force remained intact. Led by Commander Sien what has later become known as the Battle of Thranx was won for the Imperium and the rebellion crushed.[1]

Later another full-scale rebellion was averted by the Space Wolves Chapter, when the Dreadnought Bjorn the Fell-Handed slew the rebellion's leader, the rogue Psyker Vornalan.[2]

Exterminatus

Thranx was noted to have fallen silent for a period of approximately 20 years. Having not received tithes or contact, the Adeptus Terra dispatched a fleet consisting of elements of the Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Ultramarines and the Necromundan Imperial Guard. The fleet was led by Inquisitor Van Dam.[3]

Upon reaching the system, communication was established. The Planetary Governor explained that communications had been lost due to Warp Storms and Ork raiders. The Governor offered immediate reparations and apologies and invited Van Dam to the surface. As a result Van Dam and an Honour Guard of Dark Angels descended to the planet and were hosted by the Governor at an official reception. During the reception, it was discovered that the planet was under control of Genestealers and their plan to sneak aboard the fleet was thwarted. The Dark Angels and Inquisitor Van Dam retreated to orbit. Exterminatus was ordered and the planet was cleansed via Virus Bombs.[3]

A subsequent investigation by the Inquisition determined that approximately 60 years prior to the aforementioned events, an unrecorded Space Hulk was noted to have entered the Thranx system. It is believed that within 3 generations the Genestealers were able to completely control the planet.[3]
