Close Combat Biomorphs
Acid Maw
Acid Maw is a powerful tongue which drips with corrosive acids and can be used to snare prey and bring them in for consumption and digestion while leaving other limbs free for other tasks.1-p.32
Relevance: 4th edition
Acid Blood
In a Tyranid with Acid Blood, literally all of the creatures bodily fluids are acidic so deep wounds will spew acidic liquids over nearby units. It has an equally devastating effect on armour as it does on flesh and is especially effective against lightly armoured enemies such as Imperial Guard and Orks.3
Relevance: 2nd, 3rd editions
Bio-plasma
Bio-plasma is a Tyranid Biomorph. In 4th Edition it is generated in the stomach of a Tyranid creature. Through internal processes, a ball or bolt of blinding green plasma can be vomited at the enemy. It is often preceded by a high-pitched screaming.1-p32
In 2nd Edition it is a specially modified oesophagus which can vomit bio-plasmic bolts, generated by rasping internal plates, drawing its power from the stores of energy in the gut of the creature. A loud screeching noise is produced when it is launched and an electrical field around the creature's claws holds the plasma until it is fully formed. The general view is that only the Carnifex can use this, however it is available to other units for a price.2-p58 Relevance: 2nd, 3rd, 4th editions
Bonesword
A Bonesword is a form of Tyranid close-combat Bio-weaponry.
In 4th Edition Boneswords are psychic weapons which crackle with power coursing through them. Its hilt sends out a psychic pulse to nearby Tyranid units when it is stimulated (usually by combat) sending them into a killing frenzy, often succeeding in attacking an enemy even if they should by all rights be dead.1-p.31
In 2nd Edition, the blade was produced from a massively elongated horn, serrated on both edges. Gradually over time the Bonesword can grow in length due to its living status. They can also repair themselves given enough time. The hilt comes from the same creature as the blade and its small brain is implanted deep within it. While not powerful enough for independent thought, it can generate a powerful psychic blast when stimulated by the user. Because of the living nature of the blade, the psychic power flows along the nerve pathways to the endings, turning it into a weapon similar to that of a Force Weapon.3-p.52
In 1st Edition, Swordlike in appearance, the actual blade of the weapon is the horn of the Bonesword creature, it's main body forming the hilt area. The blade slowly grows in size as the Bonesword ages, and is capable of regenerating damaged sections of itself. A complex series of nerve tendrils wind throughout the blade of the Bonesword, and when the creature is stimulated it floods this nerve network with psychic energy, creating an effect somewhat similar to that of a charged Force Weapon.4-p.31
Boneswords were once the primary close-combat weapon of the Tyranid Warrior, who wielded them in pairs, but seem to have been replaced with more generic stabbing and slashing claws in recent revisions of the genus.
Relevance: 1st, 2nd, 4th editions.
Crushing Claws
Seen only on Carnifex, Crushing Claws and they are represented by huge crab-like claws. They are strong and hard enough to destroy multiple opponents in one swoop as well as easy cutting through the toughest vehicle armour.1-p31 First seen on Macragge in the Carnifex known as Old One Eye.2-p.34
Relevance: 3rd, 4th editions
Flesh Hooks
In 4th Edition and 3rd Edition, Flesh Hooks are carbon-based sinews which can be launched through a bodily contraction in a form similar to a grapnel. This allows the creature to both hook into walls, giving them greater ability to climb, and attach to enemies from a distance to prevent them from attacking while the creature approaches.1-p.32, 2-p.9
In 2nd Edition, Flesh Hooks were evident when the creatures molecular structure had been altered to include sharpened hooks which can be launched through muscular contraction from the creatures rib cage.3-p.66
Relevance: 2nd, 3rd, 4th editions
Implant Attack
Implant Attack is usually positioned in the tail or in the tongue of a Tyranid creature. These implants deliver fatal toxins and poisons to the unfortunate receiver.1-p.32, 2-p.9
Relevance: 3rd, 4th edition
Lash Whip
In 4th Edition and 3rd Edition Lash Whips are living ropes of muscle and sinew which have a will of their own. They attack with the intention of strangling and binding to make them easier prey for the Tyranid in control.1-p.31, 2-p.9
In 2nd Edition the Lash Whip was a living creature wielded only by Tyranid Warriors and Hive Tyrants. It has a small body within a bony tube which forms the handle and the rest of the body is made up of three tentacle-like strands of muscle which end in bony hooks. The Lash Whip survives by slicing flesh from its victims and consuming them, though how is unknown.3-p.52
Relevance: 2nd, 3rd, 4th editions
Rending Claws
Rending Claws are short and powerful and often tipped with diamond hard shards to form a cutting edge. They are excellent at ripping through vehicles and heavy armour as well as flesh and bone, making them deadly to all while in combat.1-p.31, 2-p.8
Relevance: 3rd, 4th editions
Scything Talons
Scything Talons are limbs which end in blades and points, often used as stabbing and slashing weapons. They are made of razor-sharp bone or chitin and often look like fused talons. They can be seen on almost any Tyranid creature with any form of morphable bio-structure.1-p.31, 2-p.8
Relevance: 3rd, 4th editions
Tail Mace
The Tail Mace is similar to a Tail Scythe. It is a huge lump of flesh on the end of the tail and is used like a wrecker-ball, to demolish heavy vehicles and sweep aside many enemies at once.1-p.33
Relevance: 4th edition
Tail Scythe
The Tail Scythe is similar to a Tail Mace and occurs on larger Tyranids. It is effectively the tail of the creature given a scythe edge, often used to sweep through large numbers of lightly armoured enemies.1-p33
Relevance: 4th edition
Tusked
Large tusks of adamantium-laced chitin extend from the head of the Tyranid and this allows them to initiate a devastating charge, often breaking through ranks of troops by smashing them aside.1-p.33
Relevance: 4th edition
