Zso Sahaal was a captain of the Night Lords legion prior to the Horus Heresy, dubbed the "Talonmaster".[1b] He eventually earned the rank of First Captain after the alleged death of Jago Sevatarion.[2a]

Biography

Early history

Zso Sahaal was born on Terra.[2b] He a member of the Kyroptera during the Great Crusade.[3]

When the Heresy began Sahaal's loyalties lay with his primarch and so served him well throughout. Sahaal believed devoutly that the Emperor had betrayed Curze and his legion. Alongside Talos Valcoran Zso Sahaal was one of the first Night Lords to reunite with Curze on Tsagualsa after the Heresy.[3] With Jago Sevatarion believed dead, Sahaal was promoted to First Captain, yet many within the First Company refused to obey him.[2a][2b]

Before the Night Haunter's death it is believed by Sahaal and others he was prepared to be his heir. However, the Callidus Assassin M'Shen took Sahaal's inheritance of the corona nox before he could be undisputedly declared the heir. Sahaal pursued the assassin in which reports confirm he had the Corona Nox and left without the First Company to protect his inheritance.[4] This act was regarded as an act of betrayal and cowardice by many others in the Legion.[1b]

However, the Eldar ambushed his ship and attempted to take the corona for themselves. It was here Sahaal was trapped in a warp storm that lasted 10,000 years.[4]

Return and Conflict

Thanks to Zso Sahaal's Sus-an Membrane he did not die when the warp storm ensnared him. Instead, time passed and when Sahaal awoke, he discovered his ship had crashed into the world Equixus roughly 10,000 years into the future, and that the Corona was gone. Sahaal began his quest for the corona once more and began by killing the gang that had stolen this precious item. He then discovered a kindred spirit amidst one of the gangs in the lower hive, an Imperial Death Cult that slightly reminded him of his master's home world of Nostramo (himself being Terran born). However, Sahaal was unlucky in that members of the Inquisition were investigating the world for heresy.[4]

His hunt made harder by the presence of the psyker Mita Ashyn within Inquisitor Kaustus's retinue and so Sahaal led the gang to war throughout the hive on Equixus. Sahaal also continued to attempt to regain the corona and eventually signaled his brother legionnaires.[4] He was, however, disappointed when upon the summons in his absence the legion forgot Konrad Curze's teachings of "Fear through focus" and discovered that the legion was now fear craving psychopaths led by the embodiment of corruption in his eyes, a daemon prince that was once his greatest rival, Krieg Acerbus. Acerbus and Sahaal then had a brief discussion regarding the nature and motivations of their primarch's Konrad Kurze and Night Haunter personas, immediately after which, Acerbus tried to claim the Corona Nox for himself. The ensuing duel with Acerbus left Sahaal with a lost arm, but he managed to escape with his prize and a heavily wounded Mita.[4a]

Having a personal bond of sorts with the Inquisitorial operative, Sahaal took her to safety. The two then hijacked a small shuttlecraft and fled from Equixis.[4b]

Attempt at uniting the legion

According to Talos of the Night Lords' 10th Company, Sahaal was able to make contact with other, less corrupted, Night Lords who were not loyal to Acerbus. However, his claim as heir was no more successful than any of the other 'chosen' with their own relics stolen back and displayed in claim.[1a] In fact, his actions after their Primarch's death earned him the nickname "the betrayer" among parts of the legion.[1b] After his bid to take power failed, Sahaal reportedly "vanished" and his whereabouts remained unknown by the 13th Black Crusade.[1a]
