The Sentinel Guard were the defensive formation of the Custodes, designed to function as a mobile bulwark to protect emissaries or other important targets against enemy attack. In order to achieve this they were most typically equipped with powerful Praesidium Shields and Sentinel Blades. Due to this role, the Sentinel Guard displayed a level of teamwork, coordination, and synchronicity that was unseen by the rest of the Custodes.1

The Ethnarchy was a powerful faction which existed on Terra towards the end of the Unification Wars. Ruled over by Eugenicist oligarchs, they maintained a small empire over the Caucasus which was protected by formidable Power Field generators. The Ethnarchy is known to have commanded formidable forces consisting of genetically modified warriors known as the Ur-Khasis, dangerous weapons from the Dark Age of Technology, and enslaved Psykers. The first attempt by Imperial forces to capture the Ethnarchy's strongholds earlier in the war had cost the lives of 20,000 Legiones Astartes and a million other casualties.1

Towards the end of the Unification Wars, the Emperor began his second attempt to topple the Ethnarchy. This time the XVIII Legion (later known as the Salamanders) was tasked with destroying the subterranean power generators feeding the Ethnarchy's power fields. In the ensuing Assault on the Tempest Galleries, the XVIIIth Legion was victorious and with their force fields down, the Ethnarchy was quickly crushed by the forces of the Emperor.1
Who the woman known as "Warrior Woman" was prior to her recruitment by the 13th Penal Legion is largely classified, her true name now lost. Originally a member of the warrior women of Xenan 7 (no doubt where her present name originates from), she was an expert hunter and tracker long before joining the Imperial Guard. More than likely she would have remained there and had a long and prosperous career if her involvement in the banned cult of Artemis had not come to light. Found guilty she was shipped off to the penal colony Tophawr III.1

Given a second chance to fight for the Imperium by Colonel Schaeffer as part of the "Last Chancers," Warrior Woman brings all her hard-earned skills to bear. She can spot enemy tracks, and follow a trail for days. She is also an expert at hand to hand combat, and able to literally leap into the fray. Armed to the teeth with a sword, knife, and a lasgun, her years of combat experience serve her well.1
Castra Tanagra is an ancient fortress on the ocean world Talassar's only continent.

History
In the aftermath of the Horus Heresy, the fortress was the site of a great battle between the Ultramarines, led in person by Roboute Guilliman, and a massive Ork Waaagh!. Afterward Guilliman ordered that the breach in the walls never be repaired, as a monument to the Ultramarines who had died there.1a

Castra Tanagra was also one of several sites throughout Ultramar used during the Heresy to conduct war simulations that allowed Guilliman to draft the Codex Astartes.2

After their induction into the Chapter, all Neophyte Ultramarines are required to make a pilgrimage to the fortress. Subsequent pilgrimages are encouraged, but few senior officers and veterans are able to make one.1b

During the Invasion of Ultramar in 999.M41, Marneus Calgar led the Ultramarines' First Company to the fortress after the battle-barge Caesar was shot down over Talassar by the Bloodborn. Although the fortress wall was still open, it was their best stronghold against the hordes of daemons being summoned by M'kar, especially when it was equipped with psychic wards that were empowered by Chief Librarian Tigurius.1b

After weeks of siege, the Ultramarines fighting to defend the breach in the walls, Calgar led the survivors of the First Company in a charge against M'kar and his daemon army. It was outside the fortress that the Daemon Prince was destroyed utterly, and the Invasion was defeated.1c

Varro Tigurius is the Chief Librarian of the Ultramarines. He was appointed to this rank after many years of fighting and because of his deep knowledge of the galaxy and his immense psychic powers.1

History
Varro Tigurius has always been a man apart; despite his decades of service to the Ultramarines and his unquestioned valour in combat, he lacks the camaraderie and easy familiarity found between other members of the chapter, who regard him with emotions ranging from wariness to suspicion; such is the curse of being a psyker.1a4

Space Marine Librarians are the most rigorously screened and conditioned of all the psykers allowed to serve the Imperium; the smallest hint of corruption, and the Librarian may become a conduit for the evils of the Warp.1b Tigurius exemplifies this strict outlook. In his mind, there is nothing more dangerous than incomplete knowledge, or a mind untrained to absorb it. In person he says little, and often answers questions with another question, seeking to lead his interrogator to discover the correct answer himself and realize the deeper meaning of the knowledge he receives. As a rule, the Ultramarines are warriors, not philosophers, and this habit of their Chief Librarian's is often an added source of tension.1a3

Tigurius himself is unique among the Imperium's psykers, in that he has the ability to foresee tactical events and invasions by the enemy before they actually happen, giving Calgar the opportunity to counter them before they even begin. These mysterious premonitions usually come in the form of dreams or small seizures, but where most people would see this as a gift, there are a few within the Imperium that are suspicious and perceive it as delving into the dark ways of Chaos. However, the Chief Librarian's loyalty to the Emperor is clearly unquestionable, and his knowledge of the galaxy, coupled with the prescience granted by his psychic ability, has proved invaluable to the chapter time and time again.Cite This

It was thanks to Tigurius that the war fleets of Warboss Madbrakka and Warmaster Niadar were annihilated the instant they emerged from the warp, and their planned attacks on Ultramar came to nothing.1a

More than simply being able to foresee a threat, Tigurius can often see the shape of future events so clearly as to guide the Ultramarines' tactical dispositions to counter them. Marneus Calgar has said that, without Tigurius's counsel, Hive Fleet Behemoth would have overwhelmed the Ultramarines during the Battle for Macragge.4a

He is one of the foremost experts on fighting Orks in the Imperium, and has guided Lord Calgar on the best ways to strike at the Ork empire of Charadon to prevent a fully formed Waaagh! from rampaging through the sector.Cite This

As Chief Librarian, Tigurius is responsible for the Library of Ptolemy and the guardianship of its contents, including the manuscript of the Codex Astartes, penned by Roboute Guilliman himself.3

Tigurius's other accomplishments include being one of the very few to have witnessed the arrival of the mysterious Legion of the Damned.1d

In battle, Tigurius's withdrawn manner disappears, replaced by the fury and valour of a true warrior. Using his psychic powers to devastating effect, Tigurius is an awesome sight, and has inspired exhausted Space Marines to new heights of valour, as shown during the Ork invasion of Boros1a, and during the Damnos Incident, when he assumed leadership of the 2nd Company after Captain Sicarius was critically wounded.1c

In recent years, Tigurius has turned his powers towards the Tyranid Hive Fleets menacing the Imperium. The sheer accuracy of his predictions about the movement and intents of the Great Devourer have led many to believe that Tigurius has managed to penetrate the Hive Mind itself, something only a psyker as powerful as the Emperor could withstand without going insane. If this is true, then Tigurius may well be the most powerful active psyker in the Imperium, second only to the Immortal God Emperor himself.1a

Invasion of Ultramar
Arguably Tigurius's finest moment came during the Invasion of Ultramar in 854999.M41. Although he failed to foresee the arrival of the Chaos force known as the Bloodborn, his prescience allowed him to dictate the disposition of the Chapter's forces in a manner that eventually led to victory.4

Tigurius himself accompanied Marneus Calgar and First Captain Agemman to Talassar, where his abilities were crucial in holding the fortress of Castra Tanagra secure from repeated waves of daemonic creatures. During each of these attacks, Tigurius grew weaker, as each use of his psychic abilities to combat the daemons weakened him more quickly than his advanced physiology could recover from. After weeks of siege, the outer wall of the fort was overrun, but Tigurius marshaled his power into one gigantic blast of power that drove the daemons back and created a psychic barrier that kept the daemons at bay, allowing the First Company to fall back to the inner keep. Tigurius himself fell into a coma and hovered near death for the next several weeks, with no Apothecary present who could tend to him.4

When the Chief Librarian was at his lowest ebb, the barrier fell, and the Daemon Prince M'kar arrived in person to invade the fortress and kill Calgar. The Daemon critically wounded Captain Agemman and held Calgar helpless, but just then Tigurius regained consciousness. Though he was too weak to move his own limbs, a dozen courageous human refugees supported his weight and helped him to the scene of the combat, where he issued a psychic blast that drove the Daemon from the fortress and severed its connection with the warp core of the star fort Indomitable in orbit. He bought Calgar and the survivors of the First Company the brief respite they needed to rally for a final charge against the Daemon.4

Before the battle, Tigurius had predicted that Captain Uriel Ventris, recently returned from a Death Oath to the Eye of Terror, would play a crucial part in the battle's outcome. He was correct; Ventris and the 4th Company of the Ultramarines arrived from Calth, bearing the true name of M'kar, and the ancient dagger that had taken his mortal life. Armed with these, Calgar destroyed the essence of the Daemon, granting it a True death, and the Ultramarines were victorious.4

The Bellrath Crusade was an Imperial Crusade lasting from 182-453.M38.1

Overview
Under the auspices of Praetor Slayban Bellrath, a powerful Terran noble and Lord General Militant of the Imperial Guard, a mighty crusade was launched to liberate the area of space designated as the Laanath Rifts, a dangerous and uncharted region located in the north-west fringes of Segmentum Pacificus. The Crusade, one of the largest in centuries, was conducted by 25 million Imperial Guard troops plus many pilgrims. The Crusade was further backed by 2 Titan Legions and 8 Space Marine Chapters. The Sons of Medusa was among the most active Space Marine forces committed to the crusade.1

The ancient civilizations within the Laanah Rifts, isolated from outside human contact since the Age of Strife, provided stiff resistance to the Crusade forces. The Sons of Medusa themselves took part in fighting against a previously unknown Xenos species known as the Hellgrammite, hideous degenerate tribes, and petty human empires who denied the rule of the Emperor. Within 50 years however, the Crusade began to falter in the face of Hellgrammite resistance and their heretical bio-mechanical monstrosities.1

With the Bellrath Crusade's salient routed and the horrific xenos harrowing at the retreat of the Imperial forces, the full might of the Sons of Medusa circumvented the aliens' attack fleets and conducted a perilous counter-attack, cutting behind the aliens' battle lines and thrusting at the heart of their domains in the Wormgyre Star System. Using the arcane science of their Explorator allies, the Sons of Medusa fleet had modified their vessels' Warp coils to help repel the "Aetheric Fire" that emitted from Wormgyre, providing them with a measure of defense in their attack on the Xenos realm. Knowing their time was short, the Sons of Medusa plunged directly into a headlong attack on the Hellgrammite throne-world with their full chapter strength, attacking from Drop Pods, Thunderhawks, and Assault Boats.1

The relentless and merciless Sons of Medusa shattered the spider-web towers and black coral structures of the Hellgrammite, monuments raised to unknown dark gods. Caught unprepared for the assault, the Hellgrammite were helpless and massacred. Whatever resistance their fire-shapers could muster was quickly put down by the Sons of Medusa. The Sons of Medusa killed all xenos that stood before them, continuing the rampage with their bare hands long after they had run out of ammunition. The onslaught carried on until the Hellgrammite throne world had been reduced to rubble and all of its inhabitants slaughtered.1

With the death of Wormgyre, Hellgrammite resistance against the crusade quickly collapsed and the race itself was quickly reduced to bands of refugees against Imperial offensives over the coming years. Within a century, a great swathe of the Laanah Rifts was brought under Imperial rule and the Sons of Medusa entered the mythology of the Sector's new settlers as the Emerald Death that fell from the stars to punish the Emperor's foes.1
To Kor Megron and his Word Bearers warband, known as The Foresworn, defiling the Shrine World of Eydolim was one of their greatest desires. Before turning to the powers of Chaos, they had discovered the planet and erected great cathedrals in the Emperor's service during the Great Crusade. In preparation for their grand offensive against the planet, Kor Megron sought out alliances with other Chaos Space Marine warbands. He succeeded in recruiting forces from Sons of Damnation, Corpsemakers, Night Lords, Red Corsairs, Iron Warriors, and Gladiator Group 138, bolstering his initial force of 200 Word Bearers to many hundred. He also acquired the aid of the Legio Excruciatus and Legio Interfector, two Traitor Titan Legions. With his new allies in hand, Kor Megron set out for the Eydolim System.1

The first assault Kor Megron and his allies undertook was against the Hive World of Jones Crispin World. With his fleet quickly entering orbit, the Chaos forces took the Imperial defenders by surprise. The World Eaters of Gladiator Group 138 led the assault against the largest Hive, Fort Crispin, massacring all in their path. Frantic pleas for aid were sent out by the worlds Astropaths, and a force of Imperial Fists responded to the call, having been deployed nearby to combat the Tau Empire. The Imperial Fists and World Eater forces battled for weeks in bloody trench warfare around Fort Crispin. The Imperial Fists became bogged down in the fighting and were unable to aid any other world in the system, which soon also came under Chaos assault.1

With the Imperial Fists tied down at Fort Crispin, Kor Megron moved his forces against other targets. The Red Corsairs moved against the orbital mines around the great gas giant Greater Eydolim. Nearby Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii Regiments from the nearby world of Lector's Lowel were dispatched to aid the defenders, but were wiped out when the raiders detonated the gas depots in the mines. The explosion was so great that it was viewed half a system away. Lector's Lowel itself soon came under attack by the Iron Warriors and Red Corsairs who were backed by a Warlord Titan of the Legio Interfector. Against this force, thet Skitarii defenders stood little chance. It soon became apparently that Eydolim itself was next to feel the wrath of Chaos and the worlds defenders scrambled to make preparations.1

Eydolim soon received aid from Crusade Group Black Gate, a force of Imperial Guard Regiments and Imperial Navy warships that had been deployed to reinforce the Damocles Gulf. The Crusade Group included 9 Cadian Regiments as well as smaller forces of Ventan Heavy Infantry, Vostroyan Firstborn, Valhallan Ice Warriors, and a company of Orn's World Militia. This greatly bolstered the undermanned PDF of the planet Days passed as the Imperial Navy battled the Strike Cruisers of the Chaos Space Marine fleets and the people of Eydolim huddled into their cathedrals and prayed earnestly for deliverance while the Imperial Guard and PDF forces dug in under the overall command of Cadian General Steinhold. As invasion neared, Steinhold prepared his men for the inevitably storm.1

The Battle Begins
A week before the assault on Eydolim began, all communication with the Imperial Navy task force in the system was lost. Leading the Chaos squadron of Cruisers was the Black Legion Battle Barge Horn of Damnation. Bulk landers brought the heretic forces to land, harried by defense lasers and Thunderbolt fighters, but the Black Legion troops of the Corpsemakers quickly established a bridgehead on the planets surface. Chaos Hell Blade and Hell Talon fighters were deployed to wrench air superiority away from the Imperial Navy squadrons on the planet. The Word Bearers, operating from 3 Frigates, followed in kind. As soon as they made planetfall in their gigantic bulk-lander, they were assaulted by desperate Cadian and PDF forces. The result was that in less than an hour, 10,000 PDF and an entire Regiment of Cadian Shock Troopers were slaughtered by the Word Bearers. Together, the Word Bearer and Black Legion forces forged onwards towards Eydolim's capital city of Eydol as Red Corsair and Night Lord reinforcements landed at the conquered bridgeheads.1

Though utterly outmatched, General Steinhold fought on. He used the Company Knights of Cadia to hold back the Chaos Space Marine advance for several hours at Hythe Ridge, though they were eventually driven back after a frenzied charge of Chaos Dreadnoughts and Defilers. After taking Hythe Ridge, the Chaos forces had acquired the valuable Promethium reserves. Meanwhile at Arabesque Station, a team of Kasrkin deployed by Valkyrie gunships attempted to ambush the Word Bearer command element. However before even half of the strike team had disembarked, Hell Talon fighters had blasted through their formation and destroyed most of their Valkyries. Only a few Kasrkin, led by Colonel Meere, escaped the debacle. Meere's forces even managed to fight on and destroy a number of Word Bearer vehicles before fleeing into the hinterland and waging guerrilla warfare. But despite their losses, the heroism of Imperial Guard forces on Eydolim was astonishing as the Chaos Forces continued to advance. Soon, Word Bearer forces were less than a day from Eydol itself.1

The Spear of Sicarius
Meanwhile, the Ultramarines 2nd Company under Captain Cato Sicarius as well as a small force of 1st Company Terminators, fresh from fighting against the Tau, were diverted by Marneus Calgar to Eydolim to aid the desperate Imperial defenders. Deploying from the Strike Cruiser Valin's Revenge, the Ultramarines rapidly deployed at the outer walls of Eydol. The first contact between the Ultramarines and Chaos Forces occurred when a small Devastator task force assault advanced elements of the Legio Interfector, successfully destroying a Chaos Reaver Titan and crippling another two Reavers in an astonishingly successful ambush. Meanwhile, the battle for the outer walls of Eydol, known as 'The Eagle Gate', was underway. While Chaos Titans hammered through the Imperial force's left flank along the Eagle Gate, a force of Khornate Daemons were summoned by the Word Bearers and swarmed over the Imperial's right flank. The Chaos Space Marine forces took a more direct route, storming straight into the center of the Eagle Gate itself. World Eater Terminators from Gladiator Group 138 tore its way into the fray while Kor Megron and his Word Bearer retinue tore through a part of the wall and faced down the heavy guns and Leman Russ Tanks of the Cadian defenders. Despite this overwhelming assault, the Ultramarines and Cadians stood firm. Meanwhile, Cato Sicarius himself defended his heavy defended but shrinking position at The Gate of Martyrs against a sea of heretics and Daemons, waiting for the right chance to spring a furious counterattack. Another detachment of Ultramarines attempted to hold back a Black Legion advance on Martyr Street.1

It was however at this point that the tide began to turn when Ultramarine forces halted the advanced of Word Bearer forces at the Gate of Martyrs, the Eastern entrance to the city. Kor Megron himself hurled into the action against Cato Sicarius. The two leaders engaged in single combat, with Kor Megron crushing the captain. However a nearby Imperial Guardsman heroically attacked the Daemon Prince with a mere bayonet, being quickly dispatched by the Daemon's warpflame attack. However the distraction was all the Ultramarines Captain needed, and Sicarius jammed his blade through the breastplate of the Daemon Prince. Kor Megron was dragged into the Warp, and the tide of the battle turned dramatically. Stunned and without their leader, the Word Bearers fell back. This was soon followed by their less numerous allies. Against all odds, the Imperial defenders had proved victorious, in no small part thanks to the heroic sacrifice of the lone unknown Guardsman.1
TauPortal

Tau Pathfinders are Tau infantry teams with long range reconnaissance capabilities, utilising specially adapted, anti-grav Devilfish troop carriers.

Overview
Pathfinder teams range far ahead of Hunter Cadres in search of enemy forces. They maintain a watch on the foe while remaining hidden, reporting details of the enemy’s nature and disposition by way of encrypted and undetectable communication systems.1 Pathfinder teams are also deployed in the role of aggressive patrol groups, maintaining dominance over a wide area around a stationary Hunter Cadre and detecting any enemy forces that attempt to approach. Occasionally, an entire Hunter Cadre of Pathfinders is tasked with a mission, such as exploring a newly discovered planet and ascertaining if it is suitable for colonisation.1

Pathfinders are equipped with a range of specialised equipment to aid in their mission. Every member of the team wears Recon Armour and carries a Markerlight, a laser designator device attached to his firearm that projects an almost invisible, highly focused beam of light at a potential target. The Markerlight is networked to a support weapon platform such as a Hammerhead gunship, and transmits precise targeting information in order to guide the fire of such units. When used to guide the armour-piercing Seeker Missiles carried as additional weapons on many Tau tanks, the Pathfinders are able to remain hidden as they call in devastatingly powerful and unerringly accurate fire right onto the target. Many Imperial troops have come to fear the small, red dot of light that appears on the body of those about to be slain, and some refer to it as the "Valkyrie’s Mark."1 Pathfinders are called to sacrifice themselves more often then their basic Fire Warrior counterparts, though recklessly wasting lives is always anathema to the Tau. However during the early days of the Great War of Confederation, Pathfinder teams sustained casualty rates of 84% or higher. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, Fire Caste academies are overflowing with volunteers wishing to be Pathfinders.5

The Devilfish troop carriers used by Pathfinder teams are fitted with a larger variant of Markerlight technology called a Marker Beacon. This is used to designate a position to which jump troops and orbital insertion craft can be guided, allowing units such as battlesuit-equipped Crisis Teams to drop directly onto their target. Each individual Pathfinder is equipped with a Pulse Carbine, which is fitted with an underslung Photon grenade launcher. The grenades are used by the Pathfinders when they react to sudden and unanticipated contact with their enemies, and they are adept at rapid deployment using their anti-grav carriers. Some Pathfinders replace their carbines with Rail Rifles, sniper weapons as accurate and deadly as any similar weapon the Imperium is capable of fielding.1 Others use experimental Ion Rifles.4

On several occasions, Pathfinder teams have held back while observing an infiltrating force, only calling in fire when their enemy is too far forward to extricate safely. When facing Tau forces likely to be accompanied by Pathfinder teams, the Deathwatch takes exceptional care to ensure mission security, equipping Kill-teams with all manner of sensor and countermeasure devices.1

TyranidsPortal

The Dagon Overlord , or know more simply as the Overlord, is a unique tyranid bio-construct to the Hive Fleet Dagon, a tool of the hive mind evolved to eradicate it's foes on the Jericho Reach, the Overlord first appeared during the opening days of the battle for Castobel, leading a mighty swarm against Trimalov Hive and dispatching its defenders in a month-long war.1

In appearance he is similar to a Hive Tyrant, but different enough to stand apart from its lesser brethren.1

Covered in slimy plates of chitin which constantly drip and leak fluid, the Overlord projects an aura of horror and menace. Its importance and power are also readily apparent when it strides alongside other Tyranid creatures, its powerful presence emboldening and maddening the lesser creatures more so than would be expected by any link to the Hive Mind, almost as if the Overlord is the embodiment of Hive Fleet Dagon’s ire toward the Jericho Reach and its alien hatred infects creatures with a personal desire to murder, maim, and kill all those in their path. It has been suggested that this notion of the beast’s personal vendetta is just the fanciful imagining of terrified Imperial Guardsmen, though only by those who have not seen the Overlord.1

Since its first appearance, the Dagon Overlord has been sighted in almost all of the major combat zones of the Orpheus Salient, leading swarm after swarm into the ranks of Imperial defenders. This has led many to believe that the Overlord is just one of many, and not a unique creature at all. However such notions of individuality are hard to determine when dealing with the Hive Mind, as it is constantly recycling its troops and adding to them by consuming worlds. This means the Overlord may well be a veteran of many wars, and may have even fallen countless times to the foe, only to be re-spawned by the Hive Mind with a fresh body and a will for vengeance.1

Both the Ordo Xenos and the Deathwatch have made attempts to find the truth behind the Overlord, if for no other reason than to catalogue a new and deadly variation of the Tyranid race. Neither has met with much success and even when the Dagon Overlord seems defeated, it invariably rises again in another place or another time.1

The Overlord is an ancient Hive Tyrant and a veteran of countless battles within the Jericho Reach, as such he has gained a special hatred for the Deathwatch, 1pg34and seems to be actively hunting for Deathwatch Kill-Teams.1

The Overlord is selective about those it chooses to devour, and picks only the strongest and most powerful of its adversaries to consume. Often it will task lesser Tyranid creatures with gathering together these bodies after, or even during a battle, and piling them at its feet so it may feast on them and grow stronger. A Dagon Overlord which devours the body of a creature heals damage and may also, over time, take on traits of those it devours as it assimilates their flesh.1

When the Dagon Overlord is slain, its death sends a shockwave through the Hive Mind. All Tyranid creatures that aren't a Synapse creature will automatically break and flee as quickly as they can, which also overrides instinctive behaviour of tyranids. He can spur a swarm of Tyranid creatures on to greater acts of fury and force them to fight on, even when grievously wounded. The Overlord has a cloud of toxins constantly oozing from its joints and creates a virulent haze of haemotoxins, neurotoxins, and deadly phage organisms all around it much in the same way as a Venomthrope, called the Miasma of the Depths.1

The Dagon Overlord may have the following biomorphs: Acid Blood, Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs and Regeneration.1

It was first encountered on Castobel. It's known for its malicious streak and ability to drive lesser Tyranids into a stronger fervour. Like most Tyranids of Dagon, the Dagon Overlord is extremily toxic and constantly dripping with venom.2
The Ravenwing Darkshroud is an archaic version of the Land Speeder Vengeance used by the Dark Angels and their Successor Chapters. These vehicles drift forward, emitting partially seen force fields of haze that spew from their ancient reliquaries. Of all the weapons deployed by the Unforgiven, it is said that the ten Darkshrouds deployed by the Ravenwing are the strangest.1

History
The Darkshroud's origin can be traced to the destruction of Caliban 10,000 years before the 41st Millennium. Despite the planet's shattering at the hands of a massive Warp Storm, the Dark Angels' Fortress-Monastery remained due to the aid of its powerful force fields. The collision of Warp energies, however, had many repercussions. Ten of the stone statues of past ages that topped the fortress's tallest spiral had survived the catastrophe, now glowing with mysterious energies. The Stone Guardians, or Ten Brothers of the Order as they were known, were taken below into The Rock and locked in stasis fields for years. It was not until the desperation of the Vendetta Campaign that the Dark Angels unleashed the arcane powers of these artifacts on the field. Each statue was mounted upon a Ravenwing Land Speeder Vengeance with great cables siphoning off its mysterious energies and amplifying it. The result was a potent power field generator which partially obscures and protects Bikes and light vehicles. The force fields generated by the Darkshroud are powerful enough to block a Lascannon shot, allowing nearby Ravenwing troops to advance without fear.2
Magister Immaterials is a title given to Tzeentch-affiliated sorcerer-scientists on Q’Sal in the Screaming Vortex that worship the power of Chaos.1

Overview
These intellectuals abandon their homes at their respective cities in order to travel and pursue knowledge. Such travellers are known to be unrelenting in their search for new and forbidden knowledge. As such, they are scholars of great renown and learning with them being great Sorcerors that are able to use their powers to heights that are normally unseen amongst Humans. On their homeworld, Magister Immaterials can either remain conduct perilous journeys between the three cities on Q’Sal cities or may even leave the planet. Though travellers, a Magister Immaterial can be a valuable asset and companion for a Chaos warband who can manage to tempt them with new lore. Normally, when they conduct their travels, they abandon any desire for political power though a rare few such individuals manage to return to their homeworld in order to become members of the upper hierarchy of their society. As a result, the ruling sorcerer-technocrats view a Magister Immaterial with both curiousity and suspicion. However, the greater majority of them that return to Q’Sal simply apply their new found knowledge to the creation of great wonders of sorcery and technology.1

The nature of their studies combined with the varied culture on Q’Sal means that these beings tend to have a risk of insanity and can be mentally deviant. Typically, a Magister Immaterial has many truly unique personality traits such as conversing through intricate gestures, the collection of objects seemingly of a trivial nature, speaking lyrical rhythms and anaecdotes or even refusing to allow their feet to touch the ground. Some can be seen as strange yet quirky individuals though dark rumours speak of more sinister habits that lie beneath a façade of cooperation. Those that court these beings learn that they will only assist those that aid them in their endeavours. Any aid provided leads to a Magister Immaterial either using their great psychic abilities as well as knowledge or simply using their contacts on Q’Sal to aid their comrade. Ultimately, however, any alliance with these beings are tenous as best as Magister Immaterials are devout worshippers of Tzeentch and thus share their patron deities ever shifting nature.1

History
Hailing from the House of Arienal on Iyanden, Iyanna was destined for greatness when she first set upon the Path of the Witch. During the Battle of the Burning Moon, all of Arienal's family save herself were killed in the Chaos Cyclonic Torpedo attack. Thereafter, Arienal embraced the ways of the Spiritseer, and her mind was ever connected to the Infinity Circuit to commune with those that she had lost. When Eldrad Ulthran brought warning to Iyanden of the Great Devourer he also told the Iyanden Seer Council that the Eldar races only ultimate hope against Slaanesh lay with Ynnead, the God of Death. While most of Iyanden's dismissed Ulthran, Arienal embraced this prophecy and in a brief moment recieved a glorious apotheosis where the spirits of living Eldar would become one with the dead. The resulting psychic backlash would stir Ynnead from his slumber, and at least defeat Slaanesh.3

Arienal's followers have been no less active than the famed Prince Yriel, throwing their hopes into the ancient prophecy known as the Phoenix Arisen; wherein the Eldar race will be reborn anew. At Iyanna's direction, they have sought the Tears of Morai-Heg, gemstone fragments that possess ancient magic that Spiritseers say would see the rebirth accomplished. Their search for the tears has brought them into contact with humans, Orks, and other primitive races. Reclaiming these tears has proven a bloody affair, and taking possession of the first required a dozen worlds left in ruin.3 Within a few short years, Iyanna's followers had grown so influential that they had outgrown Yriel's.3
Captured in Khartas' gravity well, Slaughter's Laughter crashed into the worlds northern cities and Captain Zorael led a force of three squads to the surface to root out any surviving pirates. 1a

However, things soon took a turn for the worse. The Slaughterer's Laughter's damaged Warp Drives malfunctioned and tore away at the very fabric of the Materium, opening a portal to the Warp and unleashing a horde of Chaos Daemons upon Khartas. The arriving Blood Angels Stormraven Gunships suffered catastrophic malfunctions in the ensuing storm of warp energy and crashed throughout the area, scattering the Blood Angels midst an emerging sea of Bloodletters led by the powerful Bloodthirster Ka'Bandha, a Greater Daemon of Khorne who had once battled the Blood Angels Primarch Sanguinius and has since become an arch-enemy of the Blood Angels Chapter. Captain Zorael proved no match for the mighty creature and was struck down ,then decapitated in a single blow.1a

With the fall of their Captain, dismay threatened the surviving Blood Angels as hand-to-hand combat with the Bloodletter hordes of Ka'Bandha raged. Managing to fight on and put up stiff resistance, Ka'Bandha himself was about to fly to the pocket of greatest Space Marine resistance, the Imperial shrine of Khartas, when a golden figure hurled out of the heavens like a meteor and crashed directly into the Bloodthirster. The Sanguinor, legendary protector of the Blood Angels, had arrived.1b

Engaging in mortal combat, Sanguinor proved faster and more graceful than the powerful Bloodthirster. As the Angel and the Daemon struck devastating blows to one another, Sanguinor managed to catch the Bloodthirsters whip and hurl himself forward, piercing Ka'Bandha's chest with his blade. But Ka'Bandha was still not yet slain and both combatants were weary. In a move of desperation, Sanguinor grabbed Ka'Bandha and flew high into the upper atmosphere with his jump pack. Pulling his sword from Ka'Bandha's chest, the Bloodthirster plummeted to the earth below and the Daemon was shattered, its spirit sent back to the Warp.1b

With the banishment of Ka'Bandha, his Daemonic Horde was soon scattered and the Blood Angels were rescued by reinforcements from Baal's Fist. But of the thirty Space Marines who had originally made planetfall, only six remained. Sanguinor himself vanished in the final moments of the battle, leaving the battle as mysterious as he had arrived.1b
They refer to a group of gravity projector devices whose sophistication is such that few remained even in the Great Crusade era.

Subject #696 is an unstable and unknown alien entity secured from the hulk Damnatio Magellus when it reappeared in the Slinnar Drift. The Magellus had been lost sixteen decades previously from the fleet of Rogue Trader LeCouer when it became separated from his flotilla during an unexpected warpstorm. The space hulk itself bore the marks of violent attacks when it reappeared. Gaping rents torn in her hull called to mind the monstrous claws of Tyranid bio-ships, but what the Space Marines found inside exceeded even those behemoths
in horror.1

The Kill-team was led by Deathwatch Chaplain Titus Strome at his own request, an unusual action for the dutybound old warrior. He shared a strong premonition with his team that a great foe lurked within as they breached the inners eals and he was soon proven right. Nestled in the command cathedral they found the creature that had killed the entire crew of the Magellus at rest among the charnel refuse of its victims. A slithering, monstrous thing of claws and tentacles rose to challenge the Space Marines, seemingly made of equal parts squid, bird and spider.1

The Battle-Brothers righteously belaboured the towering entity with stormbolter and plasma gun, but it availed them naught. For every limb burned or shot away, two more grew instantly to replace it and with each passing moment the beast became ever more hardened against their assault. Promethium and chain blades fared better for a time, but the creature’s endurance seemed relentless and no central mass or brain
stem could be found. Alaix was torn in two by grasping tentacles, and Faynor pierced from neck to crotch by a feathered bone-blade before, in desperation, Chaplain Strome employed a relic he had carried for over two centuries to overcome the alien fiend. 1

The Temporus Agitens was a master-crafted stasis bomb said to come from the hand of Magos Justinius Krenz, a fist-sized device able to stop time in a small radius for limited duration before expending itself. The beast of the Damnatio was engulfed by the stasis field in a brilliant flash and trapped like an insect in amber.Chaplain Strome briefly considered redirecting the stricken hulk into the nearest star but his duty to the Long Vigil stayed his hand. Such an apparently-unique specimen needed to be examined and identified so that it could be
countered, especially as the grizzled Chaplain knew of no comparable beast from all his long years of service in the Deathwatch. The transfer back to Erioch was fraught with difficulties. Another death and several injuries were incurred before the thing was finally securely contained in the Xenos Bestiarium.1

To date, examinations of Subject #696 have been largely fruitless and frustrating. Early theories of it being a warp-induced mutation or a Tyranid organism have been disproved, even though it shares traits with both. No weapon or attack has been found that is fatal to it, although several have been discovered that considerably retard its extraordinary penchant for regeneration. It has been postulated that the entity may be manifestation of a being dwelling in another dimension with only limited ingress into our own—feeding tendrils pushed through a crack, in effect. How such a creature might be killed and whether it is truly unique remain riddles that have yet to be satisfactorily answered.1

This subject is currently sealed Watch Fortress Erioch and is considered at Ultraviolet threat level.1

DarkEldarPortal
Duke Traevelliath Sliscus is a Dark Eldar Corsair, known as "The Serpent".

Biography
Hungry for glory and excitement, he has no qualms about imperilling every ship in his fleet if it will mean he can destroy an enemy ship in style. Legend has it that the Duke, tired of the constant political grind of Commorragh, decided to leave with a bang rather than a whimper and stole three Kabal flagships and fled the Dark City's port.1

An intense megalomaniac, Sliscus has been the commander of the Sky Serpents Corsairs for many thousands of years and is convinced that it is his right to rule the stars. Infamous across the Galaxy, Sliscus is famous for his unpredictable behavior. One moment he may be charming, the next utterly ruthless. Sliscus once famously agreed to parley with a human planetary Governor for clemency, only to have the entire Hive nobility butchered when a human envoy mispronounced his name.1

Sliscus's actions have become increasingly bizarre over the years: he never wears the same clothes twice and each new outfit incorporates the remains of his latest foe. The duke dines on poisoned food to build up his immune system and enjoys carving epic poems into his captives. His personal battle standards are made from the flayed skin of the Lord Admiral of Bakka, the Segmentum Fortress of Segmentum Tempestus. As a result of these actions the Duke remains an extremely popular figure among Dark Eldar society and a champion to those in exile from Commorragh. The Duke's trio of stolen flagships has been joined by many more stolen warships, eager to join The Duke in more exploits.1

Sliscus was famously the only adversary to outwit Lukas the Trickster, a Space Wolf Blood Claw famous for his cunning. During an abortive attempt to cripple Sliscus's flagship, the Dark Eldar cut out one of Lukas's hearts as a souvenir and set Lukas adrift in space. Thanks to his Space Marine physiology, Lukas survived, and was even able to laugh about the encounter2.

NecronsPortal
The Celestial Orrery is a device located at the heart of the Necron Crownworld of Thanatos and is considered one of the galaxy's greatest treasures. It was crafted by the artisans of the Oruscar Dynasty long before the War in Heaven and is beyond any price in artistic value alone. This machine consists of a web of holograms and Necrodermis with the various tiny, floating, glowing lights representing a star in the galaxy. Each of these are recorded in an intricate matrix record that contains the locations of every star in the cosmos.1

An act that snuffs out any of these lights leads to its physical counterpart undergoing a supernova millennia before its time that destroys all the nearby worlds that circle it. Thus, the Celestial Orrery is capable of immense destructive power but the act of destroying a star must be done with careful consideration as it would as it would upset the natural order of the cosmos that could create a critical chain reaction. Through further manipulation, any imbalance can be rectified and returned to proper balance though this can take thousands of years of constant precise micromanagement.1

Despite this great power, the Royal Court of Thanatos see themselves as gardeners of creation who dispassionately use the Orrery in a precise but sparing manner. They believe in only pruning the galaxy to prevent it from becoming overgrown and wild. However, the power represented by the Celestial Orrery has led to the Oruscar Dynasty waging wars to protect the device from falling into the hands of other Necrons or aliens.1
First crafted for the Archon Surasis Grief of the Kabal of the Dark Mirror, the Dark Eldar Tantalus is an assault skimmer, somewhat larger and more complex in design than the Raider, and accordingly better armed. Its distinctive twin-hulled design houses powerful engine-reactors slaved to enhanced drives and its unique scythevane armament. One of the largest Dark Eldar vehicles yet encountered by the Imperium, the cruel reavers who pilot this sleek engine of destruction take delight in mounting high-speed attacks, slicing through the hulls of enemy vehicles and tearing infantry into crimson shreds, heralded by the screech of the molecular dissonance fields of its scythevanes and the rapid fire of its Pulse-Disintegrator armament.1

ImperiumPortal
Kasimir de Valtos was the head of the de Valtos industrial cartel on the world of Pavonis1.

History
During one of his trips off-planet, his ship was ambushed by Dark Eldar pirates and de Valtos was tortured almost to death.1a1b

The experience left his body shattered, wracked with constant physical pain and his senses dulled so that he was unable to taste food or drink1a1b.1c It also drove him insane, though this was not apparent to his allies or enemies.

Outwardly, he withdrew from the active management of his cartel, and invested large sums in archaeological expeditions across the planet. To the rest of Pavonis, he was admired as a patron of the arts and a connoisseur of antiquities, as well as pitied for surviving his ordeal.1a1b

Inwardly, he was obsessed with repairing his broken body and inflicting revenge on the whole galaxy for his suffering. In the short term, he kidnapped men and women and personally tortured them to death, while also undergoing surgeries from the Dark Eldar, with whom he had allied himself (paradoxically, by undergoing torture at the Dark Eldar's hands he gained a measure of respect and authority among them).1b1d In the long term, he used his wealth to fund an obsessive search for the Nightbringer, an ancient C'tan deity that ancient scrolls had said was located on Pavonis. de Valtos believed that releasing the entity from its prison would allow him to become immortal and nearly omnipotent.1e

Allying himself with Vendare Taloun, he staged a coup d'etat on Pavonis, ousting Governor Mykola Shonai by military force, and taking her and Inquisitor Ario Barzano prisoner. Both were freed from de Valtos's estate by Captain Uriel Ventris, but not before de Valtos and his Dark Eldar allies had unearthed the Nightbringer.

It was only after they had released it, that he comprehended the sheer age and destructive power of the Nightbringer, and realized that it had no need to notice him, much less reward him in any way. He was reduced to begging for immortality, before the Nightbringer casually struck off his head.1f

In the aftermath of his death, the de Valtos cartel disintegrated, and his estate on Pavonis was abandoned. Several other cartels fell into disarray, their leaders having been killed by de Valtos shortly before the coup began. Taloun was convicted of treason and executed.
