Overview
Located in the Gothic Sector of Segmentum Obscurus,4 Purgatory was a minor Imperial research station, garrisoned by a small force of Cadian Shock Troopers.1b The planet's geography consisted of thick forests and rugged mountain ranges, and its defences were centred on the Skyguard Fortress.5

History
As a prelude to the 12th Black Crusade,5 the planet was attacked by a warband of Night Lords Chaos Space Marines, who massacred the planet's defence forces and enslaved the remaining population, leaving the planet with their ships' holds filled with slaves.3 A later investigation by the Ultramarines and the Ordo Malleus of the Inquisition, led by Inquisitor Horst,4 revealed that the Night Lords targeted the planet in order to locate a Warp-created artefact known as the Hand of Night,1b1c1d or the Hand of Darkness. This device was an ancient weapon of considerable power, later used by Ezekyle Abaddon to access the Blackstone Fortresses during his attacks throughout the Gothic Sector.4
Luther Macintyre IX is an Imperial Death World, the entire planet covered in vast deserts. The sandstorms that plague this world are capable of flaying a man's skin from his bones.4

PAGENAME is also thought to be a possible Tomb World, as an Ambull colony was found on the Ice world Simia Orichalcae, having come through a Necron warp portal to that planet when the Necron portal was inadvertly activated by an Ork vessel exiting the warp over it. However, dozens of other planets have Ambull colonies, so it is equally likely that another planet with Ambulls was the origin of the creatures found on Simia Orichalcae.1a1b

Overview
Located within the Port Maw sub-sector, Port Maw is the sector capital of the Gothic Sector of Segmentum Obscurus. The planet itself has a mysterious origin, it is a hollow ancient artificial planetoid that was discovered during the Great Crusade. The planetoid was made an Imperial world in 001.M31 and was intended to be a major facility for the Imperialis Armada in the aftermath of the Ullanor Crusade.3

Port Maw's massive naval facilities were under construction during the Great Crusade and heavy fighting over control of the planet took place during the Battle of the Coronid Deeps in the Horus Heresy.3

Today, it functions as the sector's main naval base, acting as the headquarters for Battlefleet Gothic. The planet is encircled by hundreds of defensive systems, including monitor ships, minefields and defence satellites, which rendered it impregnable during the 12th Black Crusade, otherwise known as the Gothic War. However, the forces of Chaos were able to blockade the planet for almost the whole length of the war.2 Port Maw also maintains defence space stations throughout the sector, such as those orbiting Verstap and Luxor, which are rare exceptions to the usual hegemony of the Imperial Navy and Adeptus Mechanicus in controlling such structures.1b
}}

History
Kathal, Captain of the First Company of the Sons of Malice,1 led the chapter victory rites, which bordered on cannibalism, observed by Inquisitor Pietas, a senior member of the Ordo Hereticus. Although flesh-eating rituals are not uncommon among the Space Marines, Pietas was obviously unacquainted with the barbarous customs of Space Marines and mobilized a strike force of Adepta Sororitas Celestians to deal with the "heretics." The Sisters made planetfall right in the midst of the Company at the height of their celebrations. Kathal and his troops responded to the interference of their sacred Chapter rites by savagely attacking the strike force, defeating the Celestians. Kathal dragged the meddling Inquisitor before the chapter altar where she was ritually sacrificed.

The Sons of Malice were excommunicated and now reside within the Eye of Terror, from which they wage a hate-fueled war against the Imperium they see as betraying them, as much as against other followers of Chaos.

Their homeworld was Scelus, in the Cadian Sector, and the grisly tendencies which caused their excommunication were found to be rooted in the barbaric practices of the native, feral world population. These tribes were almost entirely eradicated by the Cadian 331st in a planet-wide campaign of genocide following the chapter's withdrawal into the Eye.

Scelus was declared Perdita. During Abaddon's 13th Black Crusade the Sons of Malice fought alongside the Chaos forces, trying to reclaim their homeworld.2

Kathal, who is now over 1000 years old, is the Sons' current Chapter Master. Every century the chapter returns to the Labyrinth, an old and scarred ship that has become the Chapter's holy ground and meeting place since the loss of their homeworld. Every warband attends at the correct time, regardless of their current status or who they are fighting. Slaves from every race encountered are then brought to the Labyrinth; each battle brother then retreats to a cell, where they eat alive the slave assigned to them. Every century, some Sons of Malice set off into the halls of the Labyrinth to compete for a place amongst the legendary Doomed Ones. Only one can make it to the end and escape; the rest will either die, or be transformed into the beasts that inhabit the ship as the Warp corrupts it. This challenge took place eleven times, eleven being Malice's sacred number, with each victor's body being stored in a casket until the final champion arose. The eleventh champion was Brother Invictus who, along with the other ten champions, was sacrificed so that Malice could appear and the Sons of Malice could begin their crusade to retake their homeworld.Cite This

The High Lords of Terra collectively form the Council of the High Lords of Terra, also known as the Senatorum Imperialis. The Senatorum is an Imperial governing body of twelve leaders of the most powerful organisations of the Imperium. This body rules the Imperium in the Emperor's name. The Senatorum itself is composed of tens of thousands of Imperial dignitaries, nobleman, lords, and other officials, but these rarely meet and instead the "High Twelve" conduct the vast majority of affairs.18

The task of the High Lords is to interpret and enact the will of the Emperor. Accordingly, the position of High Lord is the most powerful in the Imperium.1

The High Lords
Determining who will hold the position of High Lord has resulted in millennia of political intrigue between the various bureaucracies seeking to increase their power. However, some organisations are so powerful, so fundamentally important to the Imperium, that their position on the Council is considered sacrosanct. For this reason the following nine offices are almost always represented as High Lords:1
*The Grand Master of the Officio Assassinorum
*The Master of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica

The remaining three positions are most likely to be filled from among the following powerful leaders:1
*Lord Commander of Segmentum Solar
*Lord Commander Militant of the Imperial Guard
*Cardinal(s) of the Holy Synod of Terra
*The Abbess of the Adepta Sororitas
*Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes
*The Chancellor of the Estate Imperium
*The Speaker for the Chartist Captains10
*Lord High Admiral of the Imperial Navy6

The position of Lord Commander of the Imperium, first held by Roboute Guilliman, continued after his wounding at the hands of Fulgrim. There were still holders of the title, often simply referred to as "Lord Guilliman" in the Primarch's honor, until at least mid-M32. The Lord Commander served as the Chairman of the Senatorum.18

Despite their vital importance to the Imperium, the Adeptus Astartes are not represented among the High Lords. This may have been set up intentionally by Roboute Guilliman himself as the Primarch fervently believed that it was the duty of the Space Marines to protect mankind, not rule it.17

History
The original High Lords were known as the Council of Terra. These consisted of key individuals to the Emperor's rule and was originally staffed by the Fabricator-General of the Adeptus Mechanicus, the Paternova of the Navis Nobilite, the Master of the Astra Telepathica, and Regent Malcador the Sigillite. Military matters were outside of the jurisdiction of this council, instead vested in Warmaster Horus.17

Following the Horus Heresy, the High Lords of Terra succeeded the Council of Terra as the main executive body of the Imperium as the beginning of the reformations initiated by Primarch Roboute Guilliman, who joined the Council as Lord Commander of the Imperium, commanding the entirety of the Imperial armed forces.2 In early M32, the rise of the Imperial Creed and the Cult of the Saviour Emperor in the Imperium meant that the Ecclesiarch of the Adeptus Ministorum was granted a seat, which soon became permanent.Cite This In 546.M32, the High Lords were killed to a man in the mad Grand Master of Assassins Drakan Vangorich's attempted coup, and anarchy reigned for a period before the Space Marines were able to restore peace.9

By 598.M35, the Senatorum Imperialis declared the founding of a new Space Marine Chapter known as the Astral Claws that were charged with the responsibility of guarding the space lanes in the region of the Maelstrom. Their mission included the interdiction of any renegades that sought to flee into the area and escape Imperial justice.7a

In M36, Goge Vandire, Master of the Administratum, lead a coup d'état and became the Ecclesiarch of the Adeptus Ministorum, holding a dual role. During his Reign of Blood, the High Lords were powerless to act. When Fabricator-General Gastaph Hediatrix demanded that the High Lords account for themselves and execute Vandire, Goge dissolved the High Lords and declared the Space Marines and Mechanicus as traitors. Before long, Goge was killed, and the High Lords returned to power.Cite This
The Book of Lorgar was said to be a tome penned by the Primarch Lorgar himself, following his dealings with old priesthoods and their dark masters. By the time of the Battle of Calth, the Book of Lorgar was 9,752 volumes and counting.1a His Astartes Legion, the Word Bearers, held this text as almost sacred, in spite of the concern this caused for others, including the Emperor himself.Cite This

Chaplain Erebus bore tattoos upon his shaven scalp said to depict long passages from the book, that he might terrify his foes with the strength of his conviction. While attempting to decode these tattoos and text from the book itself, Imperial iterator Kyril Sindermann inadvertently summoned a daemon from the Warp which destroyed many of the archives aboard the Vengeful Spirit before it was banished once more.Cite This
During the Horus Heresy, senior officers of the Word Bearers and Planetary Governors appointed by the Word Bearers were expected to own and study a copy.1b In addition, each of the traitor Primarchs was given an individualized copy. Fulgrim's copy was bound in living skin, Perturabo's copy was bound in etched steel, Alpharius was given two copies, each slightly different than each other, and Horus's copy was bound in the flesh of betrayed legionaries.1b
Cemetery worlds are somewhat alike to Shrine worlds, where in cemetery worlds large areas of the planet are given over to care for the dead. Cemetery worlds may mark the site of a huge battle, or they may be covered in gigantic mausoleums, each dedicated to a particular Imperial noble. In contrast, rare cemetery worlds may be covered in fields of endless modest plots containing the remains of the inhabitants of a nearby hive world.
Thaur is an Imperial cemetery world, serving the dead of the Askellon Sector. The planet's vast tomb complexes are maintained by the Eulogus Askelline, a bureaucracy so vast that its members' beliefs can wildly differ—including heretical cults such as the xenos-worshipping Children of Inheritance, who believe that the planet was once inhabited by vastly superior xenos race and that humanity are merely tending to it until their return.1b Thaur's currency is crafted from scrimshawed bones.1c
Malcador the Sigillite, also known as Malcador the Hero by decree of the Emperor1 was the First Lord of Terra as well as the Grand Master of Assassins2a during the Horus Heresy. He was a powerful psyker who could communicate over long distances and wield immense power. He was a close advisor to the Emperor during the Unification Wars, and the man credited with founding the Administratum of Terra.

Biography
As the Emperor's primary representative, Malcador often acted in his stead, or preceded him, the intent being for the Emperor to make his presence known only in the event of Malcador's failure. One such event was the humbling of the Word Bearers in the ruins of Monarchia. During the incident, an enraged Lorgar slapped Malcador 20 metres through the air with the back of his hand, but he not only survived but got up afterwards.4a

Very soon after the outbreak of the Horus Heresy, the Emperor told Malcador to summon "men of character, skill and determination" who would be tested and trained to become an elite group of investigators with the task of rooting out treachery and Heresy. This marked the founding of the Imperial Inquisition. Among the first Malcador approached for this duty were Death Guard hero Nathaniel Garro and former Sons of Horus Captain Iacton Qruze.3a Malcador would subsequently task Garro with recruiting a select group of individuals for him in aid of this endeavour5a5c; these individuals would be termed (at least for a time) Malcador's Knights-Errant,5b and later formed the root of the Grey Knights Space Marine chapter.7 Qruze was retained closer to home, acting as Malcador's "hand" in investigative matters such as the case of Solomon Voss.6 Malcador is noted for having given the Chaplain Edict at (presumably) Nikaea: a group of Marines that would maintain the order and discipline of their fellow Marines, and to keep watch for heresy and psychic powers, the former to be dealt with summarily, the latter to be referred to the Legion Librarium.Cite This

Malcador was active in many ways during the Heresy. As well as orchestrating the above inquisitive endeavour and aiding Rogal Dorn in organising the defence of Terra, he would use his secret position as Master of Assassins to attempt to have Horus assassinated several times. Whilst several of his despatched Assassins - including the first ever Execution Force - came close to their target, none connected, and the attempt was eventually permanently given up, on the orders of the Emperor himself.2b

During the final chapter of the Heresy, the Emperor told Malcador that he had to take his place on the Golden Throne - providing the psychic sheath to protect the human-built sections of the Webway. His original choice of replacement on the throne had been the Primarch Magnus but since he had sided with Horus, Malcador was now his chosen successor.Cite This Though he was a powerful psyker in his own right, Malcador's mental powers were nothing compared to that of the Emperor, and so when Rogal Dorn brought the severely injured ruler of mankind back to the Golden Throne, he found Malcador sitting wasted, energy lashing across his shrivelled body, tortured by the psychic bombardments of the Webway. He was almost dead. Tech-priests then made the exchange - disengaging Malcador from the machine. As he was removed, the last flicker of life left him and the dust of his corpse blew across the stone floor.1

At the instant of Malcador's death, the Emperor awoke from his coma - Malcador had saved a last kernel of strength and passed it on to the Emperor so he could give his servants their final orders.2a

Appearance and Abilities
A slender and unassuming figure dressed in pale robes, at first glance Malcador appeared no different from a thousand other Administratum functionaries, except for his staff of office and the force of his psychic presence.3b

Malcador was the most powerful human psyker in the galaxy after the Emperor himself,5a and demonstrated this psychic ability on several occasions. During the aforementioned confrontation at Monarchia, he showed physical resilience unnatural for a man of his apparent age and frailty; when smashed from his feet by the primarch Lorgar, he landed on broken ground after a distance of some twenty metres, and survived with but a few broken bones. He also demonstrated telekinetic ability, retrieving his fallen staff and bringing it sharply into his hand.4a

The Primarchs were the twenty genetically-engineered "sons" of the Emperor. The Emperor used his own DNA in their creation, and they were designed to be far superior to the average human: immensely larger, stronger, hardier, faster, and more intelligent. They were also incredibly charismatic, as their main role was to be generals and leaders of the Imperial military.

Creation of the Primarchs
They were created in a secret underground laboratory on Luna under the tightest security. According to Ingethel the Ascended, the Primarchs were created by the Emperor with the aid of forbidden sciences and arcane lore derived from the Warp.14a Eldrad Ulthran also states that the Emperor utilized dark powers to construct the Primarchs.19 However, the Gods of Chaos somehow managed to spirit them away just prior to their maturation with a great Warp vortex9 and it is speculated that they also managed to tamper with the infant Primarchs. Scattered across the galaxy, beyond the Emperor's reach, and all landed on different worlds vastly separated from their Father. The Emperor could sense that the infant Primarchs were alive, but was unable to reach them. Therefore he used their previously collected DNA samples to create the Space Marines. The genetic material of each one of the Primarchs was used to found a single Space Marine Legion, twenty in total.

The new homeworlds of the infant Primarchs and subsequent experiences on those worlds would influence and mold them to a large extent. There they quickly grew to adulthood and often rose to power, ruling, leading, and helping the inhabitants. As the Emperor found them, he was generally pleased by their actions, and quickly gave them the leadership of their respective legion.

Rediscovery
The first Primarch to be found was Horus, who became the Emperor's favourite. Most Primarchs somehow recognised the Emperor on sight, and immediately pledged their allegiance on the spot. A few, (Leman Russ, Ferrus Manus and Vulkan) only followed him after being bested in contests. Angron refused, and was abducted from his homeworld, something he never really accepted. The last to be found was Alpharius.

The overall order of the rediscovery of each Primarch by the Emperor is as follows17
*Horus
At the end of the Great Crusade Warmaster Horus fell to Chaos, and eight of his fellow Primarchs followed him against the Emperor, resulting in a full-scale civil war known as the Horus Heresy. Each Primarch chose his side, loyalists against traitors, leading their legions against their former comrades.
Fate of the Primarchs
Traitors
*Warmaster Horus was killed by the Emperor of Mankind, and his soul was obliterated. His corpse was completely destroyed by Abaddon the Despoiler, who also took over his place as overall leader of the Chaos Space Marines.
*Magnus rose to the rank of Daemon Prince of Tzeentch.
*Angron rose to the rank of Daemon prince of Khorne.
*Mortarion rose the rank of Daemon Prince of Nurgle.
*Fulgrim rose to the rank of Daemon Prince of Slaanesh.
*Lorgar rose to the rank of Daemon Prince of Chaos Undivided.
*Perturabo rose to the rank of Daemon Prince of Chaos Undivided.
*Konrad Curze, aka Night Haunter, was assassinated by Callidus assassin M'Shen. He allowed her infiltration, apparently wanting to die.
*Alpharius was killed by Roboute Guilliman, thus leaving Omegon alive. But the source which reported his death may have been manipulated. It is not known if Alpharius or Omegon is the Primarch killed in the report. Due to the report's unreliability, neither may have been killed.8.

Loyalists
*Ferrus Manus was killed at the Drop Site massacre at the start of the Horus Heresy by Fulgrim who presented his head to Horus.
*Sanguinius was slain by Horus after refusing to join him during the Battle of Terra.
*Lion El'Jonson returned to his homeworld of Caliban only to discover that his friend and second-in command Luther and the Dark Angel garrison had turned against him2. He led a strike force of his own loyal Dark Angels against the traitors. He disappeared in the resulting inferno as the world was blasted apart by a Warp Storm and a bombardment from his ships in orbit. He sleeps deep within the Rock, the biggest piece of Caliban and current home base of the Dark Angels1,2. Only the Emperor and the Watchers in the Dark know of this secret.1-p14
*Jaghatai Khan disappeared while pursuing the Dark Eldar into a Webway portal after they had managed to raid Mundus Planus. There are rumours that he fights there still, lost in the twisting paths of the Webway. After nine thousand years it seems highly unlikely, but not impossible.
*Leman Russ disappeared in the Eye of Terror. The Space Wolves hold a legend that says Russ went on a quest to find a means to cure the Emperor. His final words before his disappearance is that he would return for the 'Wolftime' (the final battle). It is also said that Leman Russ led the 13th Company into the Eye of Terror and ordered them to hunt down the Traitor Legions which had fled to the Eye of Terror, particularly the Thousand Sons.
*Rogal Dorn boarded a Chaos cruiser during a Black Crusade alongside a company of his sons and died fighting. Today, his hand is housed in the holiest shrine of the Imperial Fists chapter, and his dead body encased in amber and put in Phalanx 11.
*Roboute Guilliman was struck down with an envenomed blade by his former brother Fulgrim. His body is perfectly preserved in a stasis field at the heart of the Temple of Correction3. It is rumoured that he is still alive and that his wound is slowly healing, something normally impossible in a stasis field. The truth of this rumour is unknown but this is seen by many (including Captain Uriel Ventris) as mere optimistic thinking.
*Vulkan disappeared. The position of Chapter Master, filled by the Captain of the First Company, is considered to be a regency as the Salamanders believe that Vulkan will one day return and lead them on a great crusade against Chaos.
*Corax was racked by guilt and shame. In order to rebuild quickly the strength of his legion from the dropsite massacre on Isstvan V, Corax accelerated the growth of the gene-seed organs, producing more Space Marines, but this process also deteriorated the Gene-seed, causing many to become hulking monsters. Riddled with guilt over what he had done, Corax administered euthanasia to all of them and then locked himself away within his sanctum, the Raven's Tower. Exactly one year later he left his tower, haggard and gaunt, and took a small shuttle craft with the words Never more. It was last monitored setting a course for the Eye of Terror.

Two unknown Primarchs
Almost nothing is known about the two unknown primarchs.

References to the second and eleventh Primarchs are made in the short story, The Lighting Tower12, in which Rogal Dorn describes the plinths on which their statues stand should be vacant and says that 'no one ever spoke of those two absent brothers. Their separate tragedies had seemed like aberrations. Had they, in fact, been warnings that no one had heeded?' Also in The First Heretic, Lorgar makes several references saying that the Emperor ordered them to be forgotten. During the time five Word Bearer captains spent being shown secrets of the galaxy by the daemon Ingethel they are shown the Emperor's gene-labs where he is creating the Primarchs and the moment that they were scattered by Chaos. During their time wandering the labs as insubstantial ghosts undetectable as long as they don't touch anything they speak of the two lost legions, mentioning how they were erased from Imperial records and how Roboute Guilliman's Ultramarines legion mysteriously swelled in numbers each time one of the two legions was "erased." The implication seems clear that at least part of the fighting force of the "lost" legions was entrusted to Roboute Guilliman and incorporated into the Ultramarines.14

Note: If this is true then perhaps entire chapters descended from the original Ultramarines legion are in fact part of the gene-seed of the two lost legions. At the time of the Heresy remarks made by the five Word Bearers captains Argel Tal, Xaphen, Torgal, Malnor and Dagotal suggest that the fate of the lost legions is relatively common knowledge though kept hushed up. In the intervening ten millennia between the Heresy and the current age of the 41st millennium it is likely this information was forgotten. It is an interesting side-note that the lost legions were numbers two and eleven. Two plus eleven equals thirteen-the number of the Ultramarines legion.14

The traitor Primarchs in this story are covered with a shroud, so the fate of the second and eleventh is undetermined. They may have been found and befell a tragedy as it implies they were spoken about previously.

In the novel Prospero Burns by Dan Abnett, it is suggested that Leman Russ and his Space Wolves legion had been used by the Emperor in the past to cull/pacify the two legions and that the Emperor had created the Wolves for just an event, utilizing their barbaric, untamed nature as a sort of insurance policy for use against other Space Marine Legions. This is further demonstrated by the unleashing of the Wolves on the Thousand Sons Legion in the same novel.18

Canon Conflicts
Gregor Eisenhorn refers to the "Primarch" of the White Consuls Space Marine Chapter, when stating that he made it a point to commend a heroic Sergeant who saved his life, at the cost of the Sergeant's own, on Thracian Primaris. Since the White Consuls are a Successor Chapter, and because there are no living or active primarchs within the Imperium, he seems to be using the term "Primarch" interchangeably with that of Chapter Master.5

SpaceMarinesPortal

The Spartan Assault Tank was a large heavy tank designed during the Horus Heresy to carry a full squad of Terminator-armored Marines through the 'Ring of Death' surrounding the city of Aries Primus on Mars. The standard Land Raider at the time could not transport Terminators1. The design is based off the famous Land Raider.2

The original Spartan had the standard Land Raider armament of the day, two twin-linked lascannons (heavy bolters were not standard then) but also mounted either a heavy bolter or heavy flamer on a turret on top. It was widely spread after the Heresy, but disappeared when the standard Land Raider was re-designed to carry Terminators1. The Spartan design used today features the twin hull-mounted heavy bolters seen on contemporary Land Raider designs, as well as a pair of sponsons fitted with a quad-lascannon battery each. It is able to transport 25 Space Marines in power armour and has the largest transport capacity of any dedicated transport vehicle used in the Imperium save the Gorgon3. Additionally, it is considerably faster than other Land Raider variants despite its increased size, due to its reactor-driven motive drive systems2.

Many Space Marine Chapters still maintain these huge war machines as part of their arsenals and deploy them into warzones where even the mighty Land Raider would be torn asunder.4
The Askellon Sector is an Imperial sector in Segmentum Obscurus near the Halo Stars and the Eye of Terror.1a

History
Askellon is an ancient region, pre-dating the founding of the Imperium itself, and its history is filled with secrets and lies that have stained every generation. As if to compound its woes, the sector is cursed with a seemingly unending warp storm known as the Pandaemonium that waxes and wanes across the millennia.1b With each passing century it grows ever more intense and dangerous, raging like a hungry beast that seeks to devour the entire sector. Within Askellon, it is the prophesied Time of Ending, close to the culmination of the 41st Millennium.1c

The Askellon Sector is home to several Rogue Trader dynasties, including the houses of Anzaforr, Surena and Roth. During M41, the Anzaforr and Surena dynasties engaged in a bitter naval feud over salvage rights on several worlds newly reclaimed from abating warp storms; the conflict was ended only when sector command threatened to intervene, and imposed sanctions of penance on both sides of the war.2b

Galactic Position
To rimward, the Askellon Sector is bordered by the Scarus Sector and the Ixaniad Sector.1a
The Second Mortis Gate Campaign was a battle fought in 560.M33 by the Dark Angels and Death Guard. During the battle, almost the entire chapter took to the field and it is recorded that all three of the chapter's sacred standards—the Standard of Devastation, Standard of Fortitude and Standard of Retribution—flew over the scene of triumph.1 The war lasted three months and saw storm-wracked warfare before the traitors were finally driven from their strongholds.2

The Cryptus System is a System of the Imperium.1

History
Located in Ultima Segmentum, the Cryptus System is also known as the Cryptan Shield due to its strategic role of protecting the Blood Angels homeworld of Baal from invasion.1

The Cryptus System is rich not only in mineral wealth and the boundless energy afforded by its twin suns, but also in population. All but one of its worlds were so hostile that the only life forms that existed in great number were the tenacious legions of Humanity. From the nomads of Lysios to the inhabitants of the vast city of Phodia on Asphodex, the inhabitants of the Cryptus Shieldworlds had adapted to their harsh worlds and even flourished.1

The Cryptus System is located close to a region of space known as the Red Scar, a dangerous region of space notorious for its blood red stars whose light is harmful to the skin. To settle within this region is torturous and slow, and it is known for its high crime rate.1

In 998.M41, the Cryptus System was invaded by the Tyranid Hive Fleet Leviathan and subsequently devastated in the Cryptus Campaign.1
Dragon's End is a volcanic planet, once occupied by flying drakes and huge megasaurs. However, the planet was later settled by human colonists, who also introduced Terran horses to the planet's valleys. These colonists formed the basis of the Knight House Griffith, soon becoming deft cavalry troopers, armoured in plate made of the planet's obsidian. These mounted nobles hunted the herds of megasaurs, drawing the attention of the dragons which preyed upon these creatures. The colonists raced to complete the construction of their Knight suits, battling dragons on horseback in the interim. During this time, one warrior named Nathaniel killed three of the creatures with a lance fashioned from dragon bone, his exploits leading to his inauguration as House Griffith's first ruler. Upon the completion of the Knight suits, the war turned decisively in the humans' favour, and even long after the extinction of Dragon's End's drakes, the Knights of House Griffith are renowned as fierce and capable warriors.1

The Culexus Temple is one of the temples of the Officio Assassinorum. The motto of the temple is: That which is unknown and unseen always commands the greatest fear. This motto is quite appropriate as Psykers, their exclusive targets, are unable to sense the Culexus Assassins, aka psyker-killers.

Operatives
The Culexus Assassins are the most sinister, feared, and hated of all Imperial Assassins. They are null-entities in the warp, and their unnatural lack of a presence inspiring a sense of unease even in non-psykers. To psykers their mere presence is terrifying, invoking panic. In the confusion caused by this fear, the assassin can move in on its target and eliminate them. To purely psychic entities like daemons, they are invisible.Cite This

The Culexus Assassins possess the "Pariah Gene", making them for all intents, "soulless," accounting for their lack of warp-presence. This gene manifests itself very rarely, in a single individual among a billion, or more. This extreme rarity, coupled with the inevitable losses during training, makes the Culexus assassins the rarest of all Imperial assassins.1 The Culexus temple is known to hunt down and recruit these Pariahs but also to vat-grow them. Due to the nature of being parentless, combined with the pariah gene making them seem soulless, these Culexus struggle with social interaction. Whilst able to mimic predictive human behaviour of a character they are playing as part of a mission, they may not actually feel emotions.3

The location of the Culexus temple is a closely guarded secret, said to be located on a planet which orbits no sun, and which is beyond the reach of the Astronomican.2a

The Eldar, whose leaders are usually psychics, fear the Culexus greatly. Farseer Alladrios Kulcassian of Craftworld Alaitoc coordinated a centuries-long effort to locate and destroy this temple. Somehow he discovered the location and dispatched the Legacy of Eldanesh, a Shadow-class cruiser. However, using his precognitive powers, he discovered to his amazement that the temple's destruction would lead to the Annihilation of Alaitoc. Choosing the lesser of two evils, he re-called the cruiser home.1

Equipment
The Culexus Assassin slays his foe by using a deadly psychic blast directed through an ancient device known as an Animus Speculum. It is not fully known how this device functions, but it is speculated that the warp energy separated from its targets by the null aura of the Culexus is held in this device and then unleashed. Indeed, the weapon becomes more and more potent in the vicinity of psykers. The device fires bolts of negative psychic energy and drains the power of nearby psykers to bolster its power. Secondly, the Culexus carries an Etherium, a device that induce enormous distortion and confusion in all nearby enemies, psychic or not. Combined with the fact that the enemy is already disconcerted by the soulless Culexus, the Etherium makes the Culexus impossible to target.2b

Culexus assassins also make use of Psyk-out grenades, which are devastating to psykers, but do nothing to those without psychic potential. The grenades utilize a substance that is said to be a by-product of the constant workings of the Golden Throne itself.2b
A δτ-class2 or death world is a planet in which the native flora and fauna has evolved into naturally aggressive and dangerous forms. These eco-systems are finely balanced between continual destruction and lightning-fast reproduction. Death worlds take many forms, ranging from jungle-covered hell-holes with carnivorous plants and animals to barren, volcanic wastelands racked by ion storms.

Humans can, and do, live on these worlds, but it is a never-ending struggle. On many death worlds it is as if the entire bio-mass of the planet were consciously motivated against human settlement - concentrating forces against intruders to destroy them.1 Death worlds with human settlements or colonies can have populations of 1,000 to 15,000,000.2

Death worlds are not usually inhabited, and are nearly impossible to colonise but still need to be explored, which means the establishment of outposts and other support facilities. Some planets have rich mineral wealth, animal life, vegetables or gases, so tithes might range from Solutio Tertius to Solutio Prima.2

Crotalids are large, semi-aquatic carnivores that prefer tropical and sub-tropical rivers. They have been found all over the galaxy but the densest concentrations of sightings are clustered around the Death world of Lost Hope.1

Crotalid populations are actively hunted or even farmed on certain worlds, their meat is tough and unappetizing but their hides and teeth have some value. Hunting Crotalids for sport has some notoriety among more gauche, high society types, but it is more commonly the preserve of desperate men. Bait and traps are the clever ways to kill a Crotalid, preferably by getting it out of the water first.1

Appearance
The beasts have long scaly bodies carried on stubby, powerful legs capable of driving them forward with surprising bursts of speed over short distances. A long, finned tail drags behind the creature on land, but in water it serves as a powerful propeller.1

The Crotalid’s head is dominated by its ferocious jaws filled with serrated rows of triangular teeth. These teeth never stop growing throughout a Crotalid’s life and Crotalid feeding grounds can be easily identified by the gnawed rocks and tree trunks found in the vicinity. Despite this, instances have been reported of dead Crotalids that were killed by their teeth growing so long that they finally pierced the creatures’ own tiny brains.1

Crotalids are protected by thick scales and a rudimentary nervous system that makes them extremely difficult to kill outright. Once injured or exposed to the scent of blood, Crotalids enter a kind of feeding frenzy which overrides any kind of pain or fear response, sending them into a berserk attack of thrashing limbs and snapping jaws.1

Hunting
Crotalids are primarily ambush predators, feeding on fish, other aquatic animals and wildlife drinking at the water’s edge. They favour attacking from a submerged location and clamping their formidable jaws onto a victim before they have a chance to react. In some cases they are known to pursue prey a short distance out of the water, dragging it back to their aquatic home at the first opportunity.1

Crotalids are opportunists too and will quickly investigate any disturbances in the water, especially kills by other Crotalids, in hopes of snatching a mouthful or two for themselves in the resulting frenzy.1

A full-grown Crotalid can easily overwhelm a man, and give a Space Marine a difficult fight. Unfortunately Crotalids often appear in large numbers, quickly making their way to the top of the food chain and completely dominating the area they inhabit. As such, any encounter with one Crotalid means that several more will soon arrive, and in a heavily infested area, dozens can appear in moments.1

Migration
Crotalids in captivity have lived over seventy years, but Magos Biologis Xenologists have been unable to determine the life span of Crotalids in the wild with any precision. This is due to their unique and curious migratory habits. In fact, as a rapidly expanding population of Crotalids comes to dominate a region, their prey is completely exhausted in the course of a few decades. The Crotalid population must now migrate to a new location or face extinction, and the creatures instinctually gather in response to their growing hunger. At some undetermined point, the unconscious desires of the Crotalids enable them to move on, not by walking or swimming but by passing through the Immaterium itself. How Crotalids perform this feat is still unknown, autopsies have revealed no organ or abnormality that might give the beasts the ability to pass through the Warp. Certainly no conscious manipulation of the process seems available to the Crotalids themselves, as they can appear on worlds quite unsuited for them including desert planets and even airless worlds. Nonetheless, migratory packs of Crotalids can appear on worlds up to ten light years from their origin point and have been highly successful in establishing themselves in new environments through this apparently hit-and-miss process.1

Tracking migratory packs has proved impossible, as has keeping more than three Crotalids together in captivity.
However it appears that once a population migrates it will not do so again for several decades, for the impetus seems to be driven by population pressure. Although observation of this phenomena is limited to finding evidence of failed migrations, Crotalids appearing on a world poorly suited to them do not seem able to move on to greener pastures using this remarkable trait. For some, this reinforces the prevalent theories that the Crotalids’ ability is not consciously used but an instinctual response to environmental pressures.1

A typical migratory pack comprises anywhere up to a hundred or more fully-grown Crotalids and can cause considerable damage. When they first arrive in a new hunting ground, Crotalids are extremely aggressive and will attack anything in sight to establish their dominance.1
All Orkoid races are symbiotic with species of fungus. In fact, all of them grow from the same spores - depending on conditions the same spore may grow to a mighty Warboss or a harmless fungi. In this way, Orkoids are not just a race, but a whole ecosystem in itself. When Orks invade new worlds, this ecosystem grows. It is widely known that once a world is invaded by Orks, it is never entirely free from them again. Ork spores grow in the wilderness, giving birth to a new forms of Orkoid life. Different forms of Orkoid Fungus play essential roles in Ork society. Ork Settlements are surrounded by great patches of the fungi. Cultivated by Snotlings, they are a primal source of food in Ork society.12
Types
Puffball
These round fungi contain huge amounts of poisonous spores, which are released after they are broken or crushed. Snotlings use them as primitive fungus bombs, dropping them under the feet of an enemy. After they step on it, they will have to suffer a nasty whiff of toxic spores. All Orkoids ar immune to these spores, they only make them cough and gag. Puffballs cleaned of spores and stuffed with marinated Squig meat is a popular Ork meal. Spores collected from a different varieties of Puffballs are used to make Fungus Gas Bombs and for various medical uses.1a

Speckled Bloodshade Fungus
OrkoidSpecies
In appearance the Speckled Bloodshade is a deep red or purple fungus speckled with yellow or green flecks. It can be eaten by Orks and has important medical uses due to to its effect on the Ork bloodstream. This fungus is rich in moulds in spores found in Ork blood and skin, so it can be used to enrich the blood to speed up the Ork metabolism, usually in fungus juice injection cylinders. It is also used to slow the flow of blood - a great benefit in treating wounded Orks.1b

Mushlings and Snotrooms
Snotlings feed on fungus, often eating as much as they can, which can lead to strange side effects, one of which is becoming fungoid. Snotlings start to become lazy and feckless and eventually vegetate at the side of the drop, running into a Snotroom or Mushling - a fungus preserving the vestige of a snotling face. These are usually eaten only on festive occasions, as they become tough and large.1c

Rutted Gob-Buster
This fungus can grow very large and it becomes quite hard to eat a big one in one go, hence its name. Gob-Buster has a tough texture and strong spicy tang - big and old ones are so strong Orks sometimes have to spit them out. Some Orks consider finishing a Gob-Buster a demonstration of self-endurance.1d3

Other
Other known orkoid fungi include:
*Pink-Spotted Trottlecap - An edible mushroom.3
*Warted Nightbloomer - An edible mushroom.3
*Heartburn - An edible mushroom.3

ImperiumPortal
Battlefleet Bakka is an Imperial Navy Battlefleet based out of Bakka, the Segmentum Fortress for Segmentum Tempestus. The largest naval base closest to Macragge, it played a key role in defending Ultramar during the Battle for Macragge.1

History
In M36, a group of Tempestus tacticians dubbed the Gareox Prerogative came to prominence. This school proposed a complete change to the fleets doctrine of attack craft-based carriers which had proved very effective against pirate squadrons.Eventually gaining enough political control to influence ship designs. The result were attack craft-based carrier-warships such as the ill-fated Despoiler Class Battleship. This action eventually brought them into conflict with more traditional naval officers on Bakka, eventually leading to an all-out civil war dubbed the Gareox Incident.

Later, Battlefleet Bakka engaged in perhaps its most famous battle in history during the First Tyrannic War where their forces arrived in time to aid Macragge against Tyranid invasion. At the climax of the invasion, Admiral Zaccarius Rath sacrificed his Emperor Class Battleship Dominus Astra to destroy the orbiting Tyranid fleet of Bio Ships.2

GalaxyPortalImperiumPortal
The Astronomican is a psychic beacon which the Navigators use to pilot the spaceships of the Imperium through the otherwise unnavigable chaos of Warp-space. As the beam generated is psychic it exists within the psychic universe of the Warp. It is the duty of the Adeptus Astronomica to maintain all aspects of the Astronomican, including training those who will power it.

Overview
Constructed in M303 by the Emperor in preparation for the Great Crusade,4 the "psychic light" of the Astronomican is beamed from Terra, from the Chamber of the Astronomican. The Astronomican is powered by ten thousand1 psykers trained by the organisation; the omnipotent will of the Emperor constantly directs this energy across around fifty thousand light years of the galaxy. Although the Emperor does not provide the energy of the beacon, only he has the psychic power to handle such immense energy and direct it across the galaxy.

The psykers who power the Astronomican are recruited into the organisation through the Adeptus Astra Telepathica. They are initiated into the Adeptus Astronomica as Acolytes, and taught how to use their powers, philosophy, the meaning of their lives, and the Lore of the Astronomican. Some achieve a mystic state, gaining the status of Chosen. It is these Chosen who are eventually called to serve in the Chamber of the Astronomican. Here they fuel the Astronomican beacon with their psychic energies; as their powers are drained the Chosen slowly fade and die. Up to one hundred Psykers die each day powering the Astronomnican.1

However, the psychic power they generate through their sacrifice is directed by the mind of the Emperor across about fifty thousand light years of the galaxy. Because Terra is situated in the galactic west, the Astronomican does not cover the extreme eastern part of the galaxy. Warp travel beyond the Astronomican's reach is severely limited - this creates the effective borders of the Imperium. Because of this, destroying the Astronomican would most likely halt all Imperial Warp travel within the galaxy, effectively bringing the Imperium to its knees.Cite This

Navigators, as well as other psykers, can sense the Astronomican. It is described as a sensation of silvery light and a chorus of many heavenly voices, beginning first with a solitary voice and progressively growing into an angelic choir. It is suggested that "pious marines" who can hear the Astronomican can fall into a meditative trance when they focus on it. Space Marine Captain Gabriel Angelos occasionally entered a sort of battle trance when he heard the Astronomican while fighting, improving his prowess in combat for the duration.5

The Astronomican, unbeknownst to the Imperium, is what is drawing the Tyranid Hive Fleets to threaten the Galaxy and all of the Imperium.2
