Apollonia was a moon that was home to a secret base of the Inquisition, and the reliquary for an ancient and powerful artefact of the Thousand Sons Legion, the Athenaeum of Kallimakus.
Overview
Apollonia was the moon of a gas giant, which itself was the outermost of four planets that orbit a bloated star in an unnamed system. Apollonia was the only body with a name in the entire system, and was locked into an orbital arrangement with its planet, ensuring that no sunlight reached the moon, causing an eternal solar eclipse.[1a]
Fortress
The Inquisitorial fortress's first line of defence was conventional firepower: orbital weapon platforms to repel possible invaders, reckoned strong enough to defeat a small fleet. These defences did not prove enough to deter the attack of a fleet under the command of Ahzek Ahriman, whose vessels systematically destroyed Apollonia's defences with little loss in return. The moon was also noted to possess an unusual warp-signature, making particular sorcerous techniques - such as opening warp-gates or tunnels to the surface - difficult.[1b]
Destruction
After Ahriman was successful in retrieving the Athenaeum, the physical cohesiveness of Apollonia catastrophically weakened. Some very short time later, it imploded, the debris burrowing into a warp storm.[1c]
