Arachnus is a Forge World of the Imperium.[1a]

Overview

Named for the breed of arachnid-like megafauna that once walked its surface and were hunted to extinction by the Legio Venator, Arachnus sat at the centre of a empire that stood in defiance of the Imperium during the Great Crusade. Arachnus resisted Imperial rule and after an invasion by the Legio Astraman and Legio Laniaskara was forced to surrender. Arachnus remained hostile to Mars in the aftermath but the world became favored by the Custodian Guard thanks to its specialized laser technology. Although ill-will still lingered, Imperial rule offered Arachnus much scope to expand its powers and the ruling hierarchy saw the benefits in remaining under Imperial rule, until a better opportunity presented itself.[1a]

This interest in self-service stood at odds with those elements of the Legio Venator serving in the Great Crusade. Isolated from their homeworld and exposed both to the wider galaxy and the grand works of the Imperium, the nature of Legio Venator morphed into one of self-sacrifice. No more evident was this ideological divide than when Demi-Legios of Legio Venator were rotated back to Arachnus, where their beliefs often clashed with the motivations of those who espoused the idea that Arachnus was capable of standing apart from the Imperium. The Cataclysm of Iron brought these differences to a head, causing Arachnus to violently split and devolve into civil war.[1a] Blackshield elements were ultimately able to capture the world, renaming their segment of traitor Legio Venator forces as the Legio Tritonis. However in the final phase of the Cataclysm of Iron loyalists were able to recapture the world, with those Legio Venator who had remained loyal being the first to land upon its surface.[1b]

Other Planetary Information
