Arrian Vespaysian Macrina Porphyrius[1]

Arrian Vespaysian Macrina Porphyrius is a member of the Adeptus Custodes' Shadowkeepers, whose deeds in the Shield Host run as long as his Guardian Spear, Praeses.[1]

History

He originally petitioned the Shadowkeepers' Lockwarden commander, for a thousand days in order to join the Shield Host. As he did so, Porphyrius listed the reasons why he should be accepted. Among them were his victories, including winning the Blood Games, as well as his patience and Porphyrius' resolve in the face of hardships. However the Lockwarden's attention was finally caught, when Porphyrius mentioned the lessons he learned from being in the presence of beings and artefacts so evil, that their freedom cannot be tolerated.[1]

This led Porphyrius to be allowed to undergo the dozens of trials needed to be able to join the Shadowkeepers. His prior experiences greatly aided him, as some would require Porphyrius to encounter Daemons, the Shield Host kept imprisoned within its Dark Cells. Among his trials, was staring into the nine eyes of the Souldelver for a day and a night, without blinking. Another was besting the Eight of the Skull, without his Guardian Spear or power armor, and breathing in the fumes of the Sevenfold Trimiasma for three hours, without seeking aid. Porphyrius also had to be able to walk away unmoved from the Granter of All Six Wishes, after listening to the Daemon for an entire day. He would successfully pass all of them and went on to serve the Shadowkeepers for 183 years.[1]

During that time, Porphyrius stood watch over the Dark Cells and became a noted member, whose patience and vigilance was admired by many within the Shield Host. He would leave them only once in his career, when Porphyrius captured the Sorrow of Karakalla and brought it to be imprisoned by the Shadowkeepers. However this all changed, when the Great Rift's creation led to the Age of the Dark Imperium. In this new era, the Shield Host found itself leaving Terra more often and Porphyrius was among them that did so. This included searching for the Chalice of Darkalabaster, which was stolen from the Dark Cells, during the Battle of Lion's Gate. Porphyrius' hunt for the artefact led him to the Maelstrom, where he discovered the Chalice was in the possession of the Astral Claws Warband. The Shadowkeeper attacked the Chaos Space Marines who held it, in order to reclaim the Chalice, but the Chaos Space Marines later plunged into the heart of the Great Rift to escape from him. Porphyrius would not let this stop him from his duty, however, and he plunged in after them. However the Shadowkeepers have not had contact with him since and they now believe Porphyrius has died in his hunt for the Chalice.[1]
