Barek Zytos

Barek Zytos was a member of the Salamanders Space Marine Legion during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy.[1]

Biography

During the Heresy, Zytos joined the loyalist forces under Timur Gantulga and Eeron Kleve in their journey to Macragge. Upon their arrival, they discovered the seemingly dead body of Vulkan. As the Salamanders decided to bring their Primarch back to Nocturne inside the Unbound Flame, Zytos thought he heard a heartbeat but dismissed it.[2]

Following the Battle of Nocturne, Zytos was among the three Salamanders to discover the reborn Vulkan at Mt. Deathfire alongside Atok Abidemi and Igen Gargo. The three were named Vulkan's Draaksward, his traveling companions on his journey through the Webway to Terra. Barek Zytos, along with Vulkan and the rest of the Draaksward, eventually reached the Imperial Palace on Terra after an arduous journey.[1]

Later during the Siege of Terra Zytos alongside his two battle-brothers moved to defend the Western Hemispheric region of the Palace walls from an attack by the Thousand Sons. In the subsequent battle they were aided by Bodvar Bjarki and his pack of Space Wolves. Learning from Promeus that their apparent defeat of the Thousand Sons attack had just been a ruse to allow Magnus and an entourage to infiltrate the Palace.[3a] The group confronted Magnus and the Thousand Sons before the Golden Throne.[3b] In the subsequent battle Vulkan dueled with the Crimson King and was about to be felled by a strike from the traitor Primarch's staff, but at the last second Zytos tackled his gene-father out of the way and took the blow instead. After the battle his sacrifice and death was remembered by Bjarki and the two surviving Salamanders who marked their armor with the head of a drake.[3c]
