A Blank or Null is the bearer of a rare form of mutation. Unlike the Emperor on Terra, or an Eldar Farseer, who shine like a blazing fire in the Warp, the Blank appears as a non-entity or a null space. This 'lack' has been supposed to mean that the Blank has no soul, so to speak. The effect of this state is that the blank negate warp and psychic powers within an area around them. Psychics feel this effect to a greater or lesser degree depending on their power and use of the Warp, generally a psychic cannot be in the vicinity of a Blank without feeling repulsed, to a greater degree, Astropaths are severely affected by blanks, to the point of collapse and seizures. Normal humans will still feel the effect without even knowing it, they naturally avoid blanks. If a blank does not know of their "affliction" they may feel as though the universe has a grudge against them, as nothing ever seems to go their way. This happens without the Blank having to think about it, like a heart beating on its own accord. Any psychic power used upon them will fail to effect the Blank and it is unknown whether a Daemon can physically hurt a Blank while in corporeal form.

The origins of blanks are still a matter for discussion, some in the Imperium believe they are an experiment by the Necrons designed to help them fight their enemies that use the warp.
