Gessart was the Captain of the Third Company of the Avenging Sons Chapter, until he rebelled against the Imperium along with most of the Space Marines under his command.[1]

History

At one point, the Third Company was fighting to defend a space port on Archimedon. Gessart, determining that the Avenging Sons could not hold the port and survive, chose to instead destroy it to deny it to the enemy, guided by a vision from the Company's Librarian, Zacherys. Gessart was censured for his actions on Archimedon, resulting in the Third Company being sent on a penance patrol.[1]

While carrying out their penance, the Third Company was called to assist the Imperial authorities on the planet Helmabad, who had been fighting to quell an anti-Imperial uprising. The Third, anticipating a simple, quick campaign, went to assist but found by the time they arrived that the weak insurrection had in fact escalated to a full-blown civil war that had raged for eight years. Nonetheless Gessart committed his Company to the Helmabad warzone.[1]

Over the course of seventy days, Gessart's Marines were ground down. The rebels had control over the war and, to make matters worse, a warp-shadow descended over the Helmabad system, cutting off any chance of reinforcement or resupply. After Gessart was informed by Zacherys that the rebels were preparing to open a Warp rift, Gessart decided to abandon Helmabad. He was opposed by Herdain, the Company's Chaplain, who wanted the disgraced company to avenge their honour by sacrificing themselves for an honest cause.[1]

Gessart, valuing the Marines' survival over throwing away their lives for the corrupt government of a backwater world, chose to forsake the Imperium. He killed Herdain, along with any of the Avenging Sons who opposed his plan, before contacting the rebel forces with a deal. In exchange for leaving the planet unopposed, the Marines would open the gates to the Imperial Commander's underground redoubt. The rebel forces agreed to the bargain, storming the Commander's bunker and publicly executing him as the former Avenging Sons returned to their Strike Cruiser Vengeful in orbit.[1]

The Vengeful was barely able to escape the system as the warp rift opened, with the renegade Marines heading for sanctuary in the Eye of Terror.[1]
