Hektor Varvarus commanded the Byzant Janizars Imperial Army contingent attached to the 63rd Expeditionary Fleet under the command of the Warmaster Horus during the Great Crusade.[1a]

History

After the initial compliance of Sixty-Three Nineteen was effected, a last rebel stronghold in the Whisperhead Mountains continued to hold out, despite the Imperial Army's best efforts to crack it.[1b] Varvaras was not too proud to welcome the assistance of the Luna Wolves' Tenth Company to assault the fort, remarking that, as proud as he was of his men, they were just men, and not Astartes. He also congratulated the Tenth Company's Captain Loken on his election to the Mournival, assuring him that Varvaras and the rest of the Warmaster's long-time confidants all felt he was the right man for the post.[1c]

When officers of the Sons of Horus stampeded through the halls of the Vengeful Spirit, killing and injuring bystanders while rushing the Warmaster to the medicae deck, Varvarus called for them to be brought to account for the damage.[2x]

Varvarus attended the surrender of the Auretian Technocracy's leadership. When Angron burst from the rubble and attacked the surrendering force, a bolter round from the crossfire exploded in Varvarus's chest, killing him[2a].

Sons of Horus Apothecary Vaddon performed an autopsy and discovered shell fragments consistent with Astartes issue bolter rounds, concluding that an Astartes fired the round that killed Varvarus. When Horus's treachery was revealed, it became clear that Varvarus had been murdered on his orders for his loyalty to the Emperor and for asking too many questions[2b].
