The Horus Heresy Artbooks are a series of large background books written by Alan Merrett and lavishly illustrated by a legion of artists. Collected into a hardback omnibus, these books lay out in some detail the story of the Horus Heresy.

The hardback collection includes all of the content of the individual volumes, as well as an exclusive short story, the Kaban Project.

The Kaban Project

A short story written by Graham McNeill, the Kaban Project is set on Mars and focuses on the actions of an Adeptus Mechanicus Adept during the initial stages of the Horus Heresy. It is notable in that it features renegade Mechanicus attempting to engineer a true Artificial Intelligence. Writing this story inspired the author to further explore the role of the Adeptus Mechanicus during the Heresy, and it is possible that it may in some way tie into his upcoming novel, Mechanicum, the proposed ninth book in the Horus Heresy novel series.
