Kalidar IV (also known simply as Kalidar[1e]) is an Industrial World of the Imperium. It is the designated Capital World of the Kalidar System, and of the Kalidar Subsector as a whole.[1a]

Overview

Kalidar IV used to possess oceans, but these all dried up many millennia before M41.[1c] Now the planet is largely covered in treacherous red-grey desert.[1a][1c][1e] The surface temperature fluctuates wildly, the radiation levels are high, the wind is fierce (standing outside without protective gear can easily result in blindness and dustlung from the razor-sharp sand) and many seemingly safe areas of the deserts are actually covered in swiftdust capable of swallowing a tank. In addition the interaction of the Kalidar sun's radiation with the planet's magnetosphere means that electronic communication (including vox) is unreliable at best and practically impossible at worst.[1c][1d]

The planet's main industry is mining, specifically the mining of a psychically active crystalline mineral called lorelei, but its harsh desert climate prevents further development and life is hard.[1e]

History

In M41, the planet was invaded by the Orks of Waaagh! Gratzdakka and became a battlefield.[1a] The planet was eventually liberated by a combined force of Black Templars Space Marines and Imperial Guard forces of Paragon VI, Atraxia and Savlar.[1j]

Geography

The skies of Kalidar IV are green.[1e]

Kalidar sports a number of hive cities (at least five by early M41[Note 1]). However, due to the harsh desert conditions on the planet's surface, Kalidar's hives are not the typical towers of structures stacked on top of each other; instead, each hive is subterranean, built around the interior of mineshafts punching down into the planet's depths. The only structures above ground are industrial complexes (although these continue for some distance into the ground as well). The opulent structures normally associated with a hive spire are found towards the middle of the inhabited part of the shaft and form a ring around the shaft interior. The further from these wealthy districts one goes (up or down), the poorer and more run-down the hive becomes.[1e]

Society

The Kalidarian miners form an underclass of Kalidar IV's society. They have rebreathers surgically implanted (forcing them to subsist on a liquid diet of nutrient packs). Most of them are blind due to exposure to the planetary dust and many have minor mutations. The miners are grouped together into work gangs overseen by "pureborn" Kalidarians.[1e]

The Imperial Commander of Kalidar IV is styled the Imperial Planetary Governor. Known Governors include Lozallio Cann, who ruled the planet when Kalidar was invaded by the orks and died in the invasion.[1a]
